Talk about shooting a career in the foot.
Guy has been nowhere and while most of the other cast haven’t been major players either they at least got several other seasons plus a couple movies out of it.
Eh, he didn't exactly fall completely off a map or anything. He was the lead character in Legion (FX/Marvel) for 3 seasons and has been in some bigger movies like Godzilla, The Night at the Museum, Beauty and the Beast (Live Action). Just never reached that A-list leading man level and honestly, given what I've read of him outside of Downton I don't think he's really wants that.
He's done a shitton of audiobook narrating though. And he's the voice actor a major character on Solar Opposites.
He left Downton because he wanted variety in his roles and he definitely got it.

How though? It's a done deal from what it looks like.
We haven't seen them sign contracts, and no money has been shown to be exchanged. Gives the writers an easy way to have Jack back out of the deal.
But when I saw Jack at the Hayloft place, I'm wondering if he starts gambling and loses it all that way. Then finds solace in the German cook lady who herself had to be bailed out of gambling debts.

Something is going to happen. He and Marian's courtship and engagement went along too smoothly for the drama this show likes to inject.
He’s definitely gonna die on the business trip

I’m starting to fast forward through the Miss Scott storyline. I just don’t care.

I like the Peggy storyline. Some big actresses in this roles too.
As soon as John Adams walked away from Oscar, I turned to my fiancé and said, “Something is going to happen to that man” and then BAM. Lawd. I didn’t mean like that.
I’m irrationally angry over Marian ending her engagement. Just stupid.

I'm glad that Bertha's visit gave Gladys the confidence to shame Lady Sarah and put her in her place in a dignified manner. Nice to see that Gladys is carving a path forward for herself. I would like to see Jack buy a house on the same street a few doors down- now that would be fun. He could work on his new food process and keep in touch with Mrs. Bauer. I don't know how Oscar is letting go of Mr. Crowther and his stolen money so easily, but if the end of the episode is any indication, he may just be about to go on a tear... and somebody is going to pay.

Poor Oscar
I love his character. I hope this sends him off the deep end and he skewers the guy that stole from him. He ends up being nice and karma smashed him. He's not gonna do that again.

I was beginning to hate Bertha for forcing the marriage but she redeemed herself by helping put Lady Sarah in her place.
It had to happen but Armstrong is a still a bitch for encouraging Jack’s dismissal. I wonder what he wrote in her letter.
Marian is dumb for calling off her engagement without even speaking with him. Introducing Jack to his rich friends is a good enough excuse in my opinion.

I was hoping the little house girl was gonna run off with Jack

Whatever it was shocked her. I'm guessing it was a thank you for the tough love style she brought. You could see glimpses of her not being a complete bitch, a few times with him.

Yeah, this is a ridiculous part of the story. If she's that stupid, she was never meant to be with a smart guy like him anyway.

Marian needs to calm the frick down. If she is that much of an emotional bitch, and the engagement is truly called off, Larry dodged a bullet.
When Ada went to see the fortune teller for the last time, I turned to my wife and said "that lady reminds me of when Andrea Martin plays a foreign person."
My wife was all "that IS Andrea Martin."
"Ah, yes. That makes sense" I said to myself.

Renewed for season 4

I think it is getting a bit more interesting even if slower to develop. Phylicia Rashad has provided a restrained performance and an unlikeable character. I like that they are exploring the dynamic of light vs dark skin bigotry among the black elite. It reminds me of the "brown bag" tests that were prevalent in post civil war black society in New Orleans, where if one's skin was darker than a paper bag you were considered lesser. That period of quadroons, octoroons, passablancs, and the hierarchy within the black culture was fascinating IMO.
I would like to see a bit more of the immigrant poverty and living conditions that they showed in season 1 with Armstrong visiting her mother. While not excusing Armstrong being an a-hole, at least it showed a glimpse of perhaps why she is embittered.
Next episode gets in to the fallout of Ward McAllister's book and it's publishing, which is kind of like what happened to Truman Capote and his swans when he published his insider tell all that cooked his own goose.. It's cooking pretty well for me now after a few staid episodes after the premiere.

Indeed.
I was getting a little worried. Good to see they exercised some sense.

Premiere-night viewing has grown for five consecutive weeks, with Episode 5 drawing a new series high of 4 million U.S. cross-platform viewers within its first three days of availability. It was accompanied by a new weekly viewership high on HBO Max. Season-to-season, The Gilded Age is running up by 20%.

"Society as I Have Found It" is still in circulation if anyone is interested in reading it as well.
But yes, should be a fun one to watch.
Some other things of notes:
- Happy but also sad for Jack. Armstrong is such a bitch. Hope they continue to cover his story as it progresses.
- Loved seeing Gladys show some of her Mom's moxy and put that stiff SIL in her place.
- Vogue posted this week a rerun of an article and pictures of Consuelo Vanderbilt (inspiration for Gladys) and it was cool to see. This was after her second marriage, back here in the States.
