In the Empire Strikes Back. But in the EU, which is no liger valid, he knew not long after the Battle of Yavin when Luke destroyed the Death Star.

that just shows you how powerful Darth Sidious really was, and how content with power Yoda and Windu were.
Or how shitty of a writer George Lucas is.
quote:
Sidious realized that Anakin was the ace in the hole and whoevers side he was on would win. Yoda and Windu were too stupid to realize this for some reason and it came back to bite them in the arse. Yoda couldn't even defeat Dooku or Sidious when he fought them. One thing i learned from the prequels is Yoda wasn't as powerful as we thought, and the emperor is a bad arse. Palpatine could see how it would all unfold, and he influenced it to his liking. Yoda was off meditating about god knows what blind to it all.
Yeah, that's just fantastic: make the wise Jedi master and all around him basically retarded. That really was a great twist to make up for shitty writing.

well except Leia, but she's a girl.
I think Darth Plagious' first apprentice was a girl. So it's not a sexist enterprise.

Why didn't Yoda just kill Sidious himself when he fought him?
Because George Lucas thought it was a good idea to turn Yoda into a jumping chimpanzee.

This makes me think of the line Snape told Dumbeldore about raising Potter to be slaughtered like a pig. You telling my Yoda purposely didn't try to keep Anakin on the good side and let him help destroy every last jedi in the hopes that his son would one day stand up to him and the emperor, and kill his father, while his father kills the emperor? I don't see this. Yoda seems pretty surprised when Order 66 is executed.
If what your saying is correct, then he would have seen that coming, and that's a pretty huge sacrifice to make on the hopes that Luke will say no to the dark side and Anakin will find the good in himself and kill the empero
No, Yoda did not realize any of this before he confronted Sidious in the Senate after Order 66 had already been carried out. He came to this realization during that duel. That's why he bugged out. He knew that not only could he not defeat Sidious himself, he also knew he had figured out how the Sith would be destroyed and he had to get out of there before that knowledge died with him at the hands of Sidious.

The one thing I don't understand is that, if the Sidious and the Sith were so manipulative and powerful, how could they not sense that Luke and Leia were the children of Darth Vader. I mean Vader was in the same room as Leia and could not sense the connection? But knew it by the time ESB came around?
I think Obi Wan and Yoda were masking their Force signatures, but still it's a plot hole when Vader is right in the same room with Leia that he is not able to sense it.

Its not written, but I doubt Vader googled "who blew up my death star"
Well, Anakin was probably the most famous hero of the Clone Wars along with Obi Wan, so I'm sure the Rebellion openly spread that the son of Anakin Skywalker blew up the Death Star. I'm sure it was great PR for them.

Have to remember also that Vader hadn't been around that side of the force in a long time, and wasn't as in tune to it also.
He even says "i sense something, a presence i haven't felt since.........." when Obi Wan was on the Death Star in New Hope. Leia must not have had enough of the force in her for Vader to sense it, since he forgot what that feeling was like.

I belive you're thinking of Darth Bane. His first apprentice was a little girl. Darth Plagius only had one apprentice if I remember correctly and that was Darth Sidious.

The Republic was basically the Roman Empire/United States.
1,000 years of peace time op and/or having no real opposition made the Jedi and everyone else complacent. I don't believe the Jedi truly took the threat seriously until it was too late.
I don't buy that Yoda and company were less efficient with the force in terms of their battle ability, but I do believe the darkside clouded their ability to sense the future.

that makes sense. but it still shows that he wasn't as powerful as we thought he was.
From the original trilogy, you never get the impression that the emperor is the most powerful person in the galaxy, but you see it in the prequels.

I was simply making a sexist joke. quit taking it so seriously.

Sidious was more powerful than Yoda, and the only person ever that had the potential to be more powerful than Sidious was Anakin.

I'm guessing he didn't recognize Leia in the Force because he didn't know she existed. He recognized the feeling of Obi Wan because he knew him well from years of being around him. As for sensing the Force in someone, he immediately sensed that Luke was strong in the Force at the Battle of Yavin. But he didn't sense that Luke was his son. Thus, when he first met Leia, it's entirely possible he could sense she had at some connection to the Force, he just didn't realize she was also his daughter.

The ironic part there is it was Sidious and his master, Plagius that caused Anikin to be born.

In the Empire Strikes Back.
The first time that the Emperor or Vader speak Luke's name is after the evacuation of Hoth and the chase of the Falcon. Vader gets a holograph transmission from the Emperor. At one point the Emperor says "The Force is strong with him. The son of Skywalker must not become a Jedi."
