Fired up this gem last night after discovering that it is included with Prime Video and enjoyed the hell out of it. Fun movie with the USS Nimitz being teleported to the waters off of Pearl Harbor on December 7th 1941. Seeing the F-14 Tomcat take on a couple A6M "Zero" planes is worth the watch.

Is this the one where the tomcat pilot nearly out his aircraft in the ocean?

How does it hold up? I haven’t seen in ages. My dad and I used to watch on occasion when I was a teen.

It holds up.

Pilot that flew that scene says there was no danger in putting it in (special features with the Blu-ray).

I’ll echo what others have said in that if definitely “holds up”. The premise is very strong…almost strong enough for, dare I say….a rem…..k…no, must not do it.

Seriously though, it’s a good movie.

Great, great movie with the most purposely unfulfilling ending ever. Much better movie than Top Gun for Navy nerds as it really highlights all aspects of late 70’s Naval Aviation.

There is no more bad azz airplane than the F14 in Jolly Roger livery. A remake but with the Gerald Ford turning the Japanese Fleet into a giant artificial reef along with the world wide political fallout would be interesting.

So based on this thread, I watched this movie this week (finished it last night). It's really good/entertaining. The acting is meh at times (a lot of times it just feels like people are reading their lines off the page), but the plot is cool and the cinematography is excellent.

It's Top Gun six years before Top Gun.

Definitely would recommend to anybody looking for something to watch. And thanks for this thread, OP.

Hollywood wouldn’t be able to help itself when given the opportunity (in-universe) to have the modern characters lecture the 1941 character on why there are female fighter pilots and the XO is black, with a nod and an extra 5 minutes of dialogue about there being “much more progress to make”

Hearing that and then seeing the tomcats sweep their wings back, great scene.

Man I'm not sure how I've never seen this before today.

The flight scenes are mostly top notch. I'm honestly enjoying the flight scenes more than either top gun.
