I don't even remember Laconia being mentioned much at all, if any really, in books 5 and 6. Maybe my memory sucks.

Same here. They vaguely mention Duarte and the Laconia system but its not a big plot point until that big fricking ship shows up at Medina Station. I think that was book 7 or 8?

That's definitely spoiler territory.
Doesn't bother me, but it might some.
Books 5 and 6 are pretty fresh in my memory. They talk about Duarte and the Laconia gate pretty frequently, but it's all boogeyman talk, passing mentions, etc.

WTF happened at the end with that martian ship? Did they vanish? Was something blocking the ring?
quote:I haven't read the books, but have binged the show to catch up. I did from the start of Bobby as a Martian commando or whatever, up until where we are, in a month.
It looked like they were being destroyed, but I’m guessing they just passed through and it was all for dramatic effect. I’m a Hodor though so I can’t be sure.
Go back to the Miller subplot in season 4; you have the proto molecule building stuff for the ... Ring Builders? Blue guys?
And something killed off those guys. We saw a glimpse on the colony the Belters had... Miller found that vortex or whatever, with the "Red Guys", that killed off that planet's machinery etc (and let Miller die). Miller said that something destroyed the Blue Guys utterly, no matter what they tried to do to stop it; which is why the machines were turning on but there was no one to run them. A 'ghost planet'.
Holden and the female scientist both commented, every time they passed through the Ring, they felt something angry. Getting more angry.
Just spitballing here, but the Red Guys are a powerful race in another dimension, and Ring travel was disrupting their reality. So they wiped out the Blue Guys after having enough of that, and so things settled down afterwards. And everything was cool, until we fricked around with the proto molecule, and started up the Rings again. And we're starting to see the Red Guys getting pissed off again.

There sure was a lot of red in that last scene of the ship going through the portal..... Hhhmmmm...

Guess they dumped the budget on that episode. Wish we’d gotten more of a fight though. That was a lame death for Alex. I’m confused what killed him. Did they skip a maneuver with the proximity ship? Boo. Guess the actor really was a count. Didn’t get a scene going out like a badass even. I’ll miss Mars cowboy Alex. At least Bull is a solid replacement.
I hope we get more Bobbie next season. Cleans up fine AF.
Glad Drummer drops the baggage. Those fricks dragged scenes down.
Yup. Again, more chemistry with the hot journalist chick. I want more of her. Less Naomi.
So. Who do we wish had been cast as Holden? First few seasons he had Thomas Jane to play off which helped him considerably. He’s awful without him.

Sorry, but if anyone is buying the deep, emotional bond between Holden and Naomi, please stand up. It's as forced and contrived as the Rey-Lo coupling from Star Wars. And 3 episodes wasted on Naomi and Philip, talking about their feelings.

How are you confused, they explained it?
As we've seen throughout the show, burning and getting "the juice" is not comfortable and kicks your arse. They've even had close moments in the past where people were getting messed up from a hard burn.
Basically, he burned one too many times and had a stroke. That's it.

I always thought Holden was overdone. It almost made me stop watching in season 1.
If you told me he was told to play a character who really doesn't know what he's doing and super insecure so he tries to fake that, I'd say the guy playing Holden is nailing it

Btw do we know how many seasons this show has left? Does it really have one more TV season but there are four books remaining (6-9)?
If so, ya we are getting GoT here because they wasted time on dumb shite and now we will speed race through major events.

They did not at all. He was an experienced pilot. Burned just fine to get there... and strokes out as they’re bringing Naomi aboard?
As I said. It seems like they completely fricking took a scene out. I.e. the maneuver that killed him. It was a weak arse death scene. Totally halfassed.

Hey, I'm not saying it was a great death, but people stroke out doing stuff they've done a million times before.
Basketball players die on the court.
He burned one too many times. That's it.

I came here to say that. I was farting around on my phone and look at as Bobby is asking for Alex expecting some incoming missiles or a message and Alex is just staring into space. I had to rewind it to verify what may have been the stupidest death for a main character ever.

Funny enough, also one of the more realistic deaths in a show too.
All too often, character gets his heroic over the top death. Dude stroked out. Most of us will go out in rather boring fashion.
It's probably a little disappointing since we all knew it was coming since he was getting booted.

IMO, the actor deserves awards for how he's portrayed Amos.
Oh don’t get me wrong - he’s fantastic. I was half joking. I get his character arc and they’ve done a great job of making it believable. I say half joking because despite all of that, he’s still great when he goes into skull cracking mode.
Honestly though, I think his storyline in this season was one of the only things that kept me interested. 75% of the season felt like character development - specifically Marco, Phillip, and Drummer. Character development is fine, but usually it leads to a payoff. And those payoffs were weak at best.
The most egregious example being Drummer’s decision. If they had done it well, that would have been a “holy shite” moment. But instead it just fell flat. Same thing with the video of Phillip in the airlock, or Marco’s trip back to the ring gates. Instead of consequential moments, they all felt like just another scene in the show.
I can’t help but wonder how much of my disappointment is because I watched it every week instead of binging. I thought the first three episodes were fantastic.

There was a considerable drop off after 4. No real coverage of earth and the destruction, not enough crazy scenes of amos fighting to stay alive on earth, no cool planets, and no proto molecule. Just a weird sop opera between Naomi, Marco, Fillip, and marks on a wall. Just bad writing and pacing after episode 4. And the girl that plays Naomi is just not a good actress. That much screen time was cringe.

I think focusing on the Belters was what made this season so hard to churn through. I get the weird dialect in theory, although that was a bit rough; but why does every single one of them have to have the emotional stability of a 2 year old? Crying constantly, flipping around, lots of bluster, lots of backing down. Combined with the accent, it was like watching a community of functional retards.
The bigger storyline held a ton of promise, it was just painful to catch the details.
Like others have said, I think there's just better chemistry potential with Monica than Naomi (actresses).

I think that was supposed to be the ship and everything on it deatomizing. If that's even a word.

He's trying to play a brooding character, but he just comes off kinda emo.
Book Holden had a lot more "aw shucks" to him, if that makes any sense.

This season is not the first time the show has made significant changes from the book, but this is the first time they've fricked up every single change they made.
I understand Cas Anvar couldn't be brought back, but the core cast is half as good without him.
Drummer did not have the role she did in the book. That was another character, and everything about that other characters storyline had much higher stakes. They destroyed that story.
I don't understand why so much screentime was given to Naomi. All of those chapters were thoughts in her head, and those would have been perfectly good spots to develop the character whose place Drummer takes, and to give us another big space battle that was in the book.
I'll rewatch before next season, but I just can't believe that the authors signed off on this. They've been in the writers room. Maybe they had less or no input this season. They're pretty liberal though, so maybe they wanted to push the poor belter narrative harder.
I don't know. Game of Thrones and The Wire survived their season 2 lows.

Perhaps she earns her screen time the old fashioned way.

i agree Naomi made this season suck but im not sure it was the actresses fault. look at what the writing gave her. given the circumstances id say she did ok
everything on the chetzemoka was without lines, except for that god forsaken message that replayed 1000 times. That alone is pretty bad. This scene lasted way too long
then have to simulate CO2 poisoning every time you venture into that room. so, heavy breathing
also surrounded by bombs .
plus a space walk so youre pretty fricked up from that already.
Not a Naomi fan but im having a hard time imagining any actress making these scenes, as written, any better.
The family scenes were pretty bad too. they mostly sucked due to Filip though.
