Just watching the trailers I went in with with two possible conclusions of what would be in the ending.
A) He was a mental patient all along and everything was all in his head.
or
B) He was really a cop and they would slowly cause him to go crazy, and he would be a permanent patient there.
Though I went in thinking this I had no idea how it would unfold. That being said I thought it was very entertaining and still up in the air as to weather his comment in the end was proof that he was really cured and just wanted to forget about his past or he was instead regressing.

i guess im an idiot? so he did go in crazy...? or did he become crazy during the process?
the lighthouse scene should have uncovered your questions and tied everything together.

Did the film pretty much follow the novel accurately?

The line "Who is patient number 67?" in the preview made the movie very predictable.

I really enjoyed this movie. I hadn't seen any trailers for the movie (just knew Leo and Scorsese = the shite) so I had no idea what to expect. It was much darker and scarier than I expected. Some of the imagery you could imagine, as mentioned earlier, in a Hitchcock movie. While I had an idea that Teddy was the 67th patient I was just looking forward to seeing how they would explain it. I agree with others that have said that Andrew had gotten better and wanted the labatomy to be done. I think his experiences in the war and the haunting memories of his wife/kids was just too much for him to want to live with. 8/10.

it is my understanding that when he said... "is it better to die a good man than to live as a monster" or whatever.... that he was aware of who he was and what he had done, but chose to have the lobotomy.
that's what I thought too

Is there any chance that Leo killed his three kids and his wife because Kingsley kept saying what a horrible crime he did?

No, the wife did it. Not up for debate

i get everything about the movie except just one thing....why did andrew burn down the apt building with his wife in it? was he trying to kill her or was it an accident?

i dont think there was a burned apartment building. he shot his wife at the lake house, so where would the apartment be?
i think he made up that story as to what happened to his wife in his mind.

What about in the beginning they're on a ship arriving at the island. what did they do just take him to the other side of the island or something?
Posted on 2/21/10 at 4:42 pm to DanMullenIsOurMan
you're to believe they gave him the clothes and took him out on the ferry, knowing that his delusions would take over and he would think he was arriving at the island for the first time.
The doctor who then introduced himself as the other US Marshall led Leo right where his delusions wanted to take him

Anyone think Shutter Island was alot like "The Number 23"?
You are following a character who has a psychosis, you are intrenched in his world, only to find out in the end HE is the one he was looking for all along and was, in a sense, the real murderer and blames himself in the end.

didn't they say that she'd burned the apt. (or at least set it on fire, not sure it burned to the ground), and that's why they moved to the lake house. and that incident was one of the signs that she was going nuts.

I also think he wanted to keep thinking of his wife as the woman he loved and not the person who killed their kids.

Cawley knew Andrew's story well, and was most likely just having some fun as he was about to yet again embark on a mission to convince Andrew who he really was.
A psychiatrist wouldn't do something like that to have with a patient. Him repeating the phrase was likely an attempt to trigger the memories of his wife drowning his children. I trying to help a patient process repressed traumatic memories some type of exposure is the preferred method. Most psychotherapies for PTSD eventually come down to some exposure component.

I agree with this. I think the treatment worked and he's sane now, but doesn't wany to live with himself.
I'm baffled by people who are ripping the movie based on its "surprise factor." Who gives a shite? It is the mark a of a lousy movie that relies entirely on a shocking twist. I was pretty sure he was crazy early on, pretty much from meeting Max von Sydow on, but that didn't mean it wasn't an interesting movie to see the barn of yarn come unraveled. I love process.

I just watched the movie and was left with 2 questions-
1) I felt like the quote about monsters was said earlier in the movie?
2) After Leo leaves with the doctors for the Lobotomy. they show the lighthouse in the very next scene and the movie ends on that. Going through both scenes I thought he had excepted reality and didn't want to live with the memories. But when they show the lighthouse I thought they were insinuating that Leo was actually Teddy, he accepted he would never get off the island, and they took him to the lighthouse to do the lobotomy where all along Teddy thought they were doing experimental surgeries in there?

I don't think they were really doing experimental brain surgeries in the lighthouse.
