I'm just going to say this- I thought The Last Starfighter was aimed at an older crowd than the other movies. Alex was about to go to college, and he was hooking up with Mary Catherine Stewart

Note the Bud Light product placement:

**forget the "Bud Light is for trannies" crap, this was the 80's, and that was prime young people beer.

This was aimed at 17-18 yr olds. You didn't have the total fantasy of Star Wars, where Luke was some dude on another planet; this was a recent high school grad trying to escape a trailer park. That's what made it so cool, the home-life premise was completely real.

I think a lot of movies in that era, and probably against OPs original thought, were geared with both kid and adult content.

As a child of the 70s/80s, a lot of things weren't just the it's too adult or it's just kid stuff. I appreciate wholeheartedly my parents allowing me to see things that nowadays would trigger the frick out of people.

I remember seeing Airplane! as an example (since it came up with parodies)... and I saw some tits. Yes, I loved it as a kid. But Airplane! was a great parody from movies and shows I hadn't seen before, but then watched afterwards.

There has been some good stuff in this thread, but I will add Red Dawn. Perhaps not a kid movie, but still.

What about getting those movies on vhs at home while getting prime mid-90s masterpieces in theater?

RE the last starfighter- I grew up with a couple of friends in two different trailer parks, and Starlight was a really nice place compared to the parks my friends lived in.

Alex- "I'm just a poor kid from a trailer park"

Centauri- "If that's what you think, that's all you'll ever be"

Top ten movie quotes.

How the heck did a 80's movies thread get this far with a bunch of guys without someone saying Fast Times at Ridgemont High?

Also, Flashdance, Footloose, Weird Science. The guys usually love Weird Science.

Well, the OP mention for kids so that's probably a good reason why.

I’ll throw out an obscure one, but I know a few posters have seen, The Ice Pirates.

It was definitely a campy, B-movie, but was a fun watch as a kid.

It’s going to sound weird, but I really think it’s because kids played outside more in the 80s. They didn’t just sit in front of a TV, or look at a phone screen, for 12 hours a day. So when movies were made for kids it was a big production and kids were interested. It was an hour an a half out of their week that they spent watching something.

Today’s kids consume media non-stop. Production for kids has gone from quality to quantity because of the sheer amount of hours that they need to produce to keep kids entertained.

As someone who graduated from college in 1983, I think one reason those movies appealed to both kids and adults was because adults were a lot less serious back then. The money was flowing & we did everything we could to have a good time.

We were buying new toys: 32" TV's, VCR's, direct drive turntables, Dolby stereos with cassette decks. I think I had nearly all of my albums on cassettes to play in the car. I had miles of coaxial cable under the carpet, and used splitters, to run cable all over my house. The 80's was when we figured out how to hook our TV to our stereos. We actually used the auxiliary hook ups for the first time

I bought road bikes and dirt bikes, because exercise was a big part of my life. The 80's was when sporting goods manufacturers really concentrated on making specialized clothing for different sports. Before then gym shorts, a tee shirt and tennis shoes were appropriate for whatever sport you did. I bought the Nike cross training shoes Chris Jackson wore on the cover of Sports Illustrated in 1989.

I wasn't acting like an adult.

Pretty much any Brian de Palma movie from the 80s

Saw blowout for the first time over the weekend. Loved it.

Obviously not kids movies, but still all great.
