Was he the guy in Kosciusko, MS's Strand theater that stood up and yelled,"NO!" when Long Hair killed Wil Anderson in The Cowboys (1972)? I was there to hear it. He definitely sounds like a candidate for it.

It was a joke. He described himself as a stoner-clown at that age.

I think it was more of a final straw kind of thing.

Two things:

1. Wayne was not a bigot. He was a product of his time (You could claim anyone pre-2000 was a bigot, due to societal norms). All three of his wives were Hispanic. He hired Woody Strode, when he was "blacklisted" due to his participation in the civil rights movement. Duke was a Huge Conservative Republican but was not a racist.

2. The day the Duke died, began the pussification of America.

He never should have changed his name.

That was also acceptable too. Half of us wouldn't be here if our dad's, granddad's, great granddads hadn't made a move on the mom's, grandmom's and great grandmom's.

The Duke's grandson, Brendan Wayne, is the body double for Din Djarin in the Mandalorian. It's why Mando has such a badass walk. He purposely walks like John Wayne.
