Racism and Sexism aren't very separated on the Oppression Olympics' tiers

Sure, but very little of Sinners deals with racism. More of a side story, if not a prop

The Bride is hamfistedly about sexist oppression, the most fabricated and overtly fallacious of all the tiers, similar to Poor Things. With both those films the messaging is so overt, it becomes corny.

Horror movies historically have always done well at the box office (minus 1989-1995) but the Roger Corman formula is simple. Relatively low budget, high returns. Why do you think Jason Blum pumps out multiple low budget horror movies a year? Because the return on investment is HUGE. The fact that they spent 90 million on a horror movie is insane!

The only way to justify that budget is if an auteur like a Chris Nolan or a Paul Thomas Anderson was at the helm, not Maggie Gylenhaal.

Scream 7 cost over twice as less and is about to turn a nice profit, with a sequel all but guaranteed.

What?

Are you just being pedantic and removing the specific ("stealing black culture") from the general (racism)?

Because the movie is an allegory for oppression of black people and stealing black culture.

This is a much better criticism of the movie than the feminism stuff.

The movie is bombing because it's simply a bad movie. A better director could have done it with the feminism and made a good movie.

swear I wouldn’t even know this movie existed if not for this board.

Did it get ANY publicity?

I imagine the studio knew it sucked and tried to bury it.

I hadn't heard shite about it until yesterday when my friend went and saw it. She said it was horrible and after doing some reading looks like it was predictable. Maggie G gets an amazing cast because of who she is but between having no business doing this kind of movie and of course making it some "social commentary" it's an absolute disaster

I watch a good bit of boxing and, for whatever reason, they advertised it a shite ton on DAZN. Even putting the logo on the ring mat. Every time I saw the trailer it made me want to see it less, so I’m not surprised it’s bombing. It actually reminds me more of Joker 2 (which was also a catastrophic bomb) than Sinners in that it seems to be weird just for the sake of being weird.

could be wrong but that indicates, as well as when it was released, that the studio knew it was a dog.

It had production issues and it has had its release date bumped at least twice. This is a dumping.

It also looks much more like a feminist reimagining of a classic monster inside of a crime/noir/experimental musical than it does a horror film.

That may be one of the craziest descriptions of a movie I have ever heard.

Apparently was in post production for 2 years trying to make it less shitty. They knew it would bomb after the wrap.

Just got out. I didn't think it was as bad as many are saying, but it's pretty forgettable. The saving grace is Jessie Buckley. She's incredible. She might be the best actress working right now. Bale isn't given much to work with. This is one of his weakest performances.

Yes, obviously the theme ffs. Obviously I mean the overt conflicts in the film. Very little involve racism, but as a side story.

The Bride is an overt tale of the horrors of traditional gender roles as they apply to women.

And every conflict in the film is exactly that, or in direct service of that

Of course, the worse this movie does, the more convinced they'll be that this just PROVES how misogynistic society is and we're just not ready for such a powerful story! It's clearly ahead of its time!

Can you explain the connection? Maybe I don't understand the definition of racism.

Let me guess, the monster is straight, white men.
