Bumping this old thread. I finally watched this series over the last two months. I will say that somewhere in the middle, season 3 or 4, it almost lost me for a bit. I felt things were just getting kinda repetitive at times. However, it was all worth it as Season 6, specifically the series finale, were incredible!

A fantastic finale but did leave a few loose ends. Five years after, the East opened up and it's pretty certain the kids would have met their parents again. What a scene that would be.
Philip likely meets with his Russian son soon after the finale.
Paige will be answering A LOT of questions. I'm not sure she doesn't end up in a courtroom and ruined, perhaps deported.
"Clark's" old squeeze Martha probably never returns to the States to see her parents. If Elizabeth and Philip break up, Philip might try to contact her.
Stan's career is over and he's haunted the rest of his days.
Overall, this was a tremendously well conceived, written and performed series. Gabriel (played by the great Frank Langella) and Claudia (Margot Martindale) were top-notch in every scene.

She wouldn't be deported. She's a US citizen and has no other citizenship.

3 did me in, for now. I even have a thread about it to see if it was worth pushing through. I decided to finish 3; which the last few episodes before the season finale started to give me hope, then the finale was a letdown compared to the build-up.
I plan to eventually finish it, but I am going to do it 1 season at a time between other shows. Right now I am halfway through Turn, and plan to watch 4 once this is done.

sorry for the bump, but I finally finished this series this weekend. It took me a long time. The last season was pretty good. Probably because I could see the finish line.
The finale was great. Definitely sad for a lot of people. The fact that Philip and Elizabeth ended up back in Russia without their kids was great punishment for them. They always thought that when the sh*t hit the fan, they would scoop up the kids and head back to Russia. Well Paige showed them that it wasn't that easy.
I really hated Elizabeth. I was hoping she would get killed.
I totally forgot about Martha. She really got screwed. I hope she was at least able to adopt the little girl.
Philip's son was a plot line that really just dropped dead.
I think one of the things to keep Stan going is the fact that he is the guardian of Henry now. Not sure how Paige will make out. Does she stay on the run. Does she turn herself in? Does she contact Stan and blackmail him to not rat her out?
I was a little bit expecting Arkady to shoot Philip and Elizabeth in the car. Ending their story.
Glad I'm finished but it was a long trip.

You felt it was a slog? I don't remember feeling that way about the show. Matter of fact, I keep telling myself I need to do a rewatch.

i felt it was a slog. Some episodes are a slow burn. Also it was a lot of episodes.
But I am glad I stuck with it

One of the best TV series ever (and my personal #1). For a show to make my Reagan loving, commie-hating heart root for the KGB, it has to have great writing, acting and execution. This had it all.
Acting was top notch.
All main characters were well fleshed out.
Soundtrack was integral.
Finale absolutely stuck the landing.

Sigh.
The days when shows really did have well progressed character arcs because they weren't shoved into 8 episodes in a season. Miss that.

Elizabeth was ice cold. In one of the later seasons when she was working the black lady who worked at Lockheed, she killed or maimed a total random stranger to a better job for her mark.
Martha would have been killed if Phillip was on the same level as Elizabeth. Not only did they let her live, albeit in communist Russia, she was allowed to adopt a child. Phillip knew that’s what she always wanted and he allowed her to have that.
The Americans is one of my all-time favorite series.

You are probably right. Seems like nowadays the trigger gets pulled early on canceling shows.
My comment was nothing negative about this show. It was great. It just took me a long time to watch it. There were so many story lines and I am upset about half of them. I guess that's a sign of a good show

frick that treasonous b*tch

Always wondered that myself. It was 1987 so a lot easier to live under an assumed identity would she contact the KGB and continue working for them? She would probably have to move to another part of the country

When Elizabeth's lover Gregory is killed is a great example of this. Very good music throughout.

Ultimately, yes she committed treason. But she never really knew she was working with the Russians. not until the very end. I guess she could have turned herself in at that point.
But for the majority of her time with Philip, she thought he was a USA official that kept tabs on the FBI.

One of my favorite series of all time. Growing up in the 80's I'm sure helped in that but the whole Cold War era of the 80's is nostalgic to me and having been interesting in the military and aircraft all my life this series checked so my boxes for me.
Good writing, tense, great villains that you kind of like but then you snap out of it and think how bad they are. Folding in diff story lines and conundrums were awesome, but you then wonder how they could in reality do this while having kids.
As far as Paige goes, she was annoying and trying to be involved in this world was stupid and the parents getting her involved was foolish.
With her staying and letting her parents get on the train was a tough decision and one where she really rolled the dice in hopes of not being charged. Difficult decision for her and what made her so sure she couldn't have a good life in Russia as a family. I don't remember if it was ever explained by her but i seem to remember it just sort of ended.
In the end, it was a great series with no happy endings in the finale. I might watch it again.
That series made me a fan of Matthew Rhys.

On a serious note, it is one of my favorite series - up there w/ Breaking Bad and BCS.
On a not so serious note, they had to go back to Russia because Al Gore was about to invent the internet and their days of being travel agents were numbered.

speaking of that. one of the plot points of the last season was that the travel agency was struggling financially. they were probably going to have to pull Henry from his fancy private school. Why wouldn't the russian government just float them some money to keep the business running and keeping the cover of the travel agency?

Not a valid defense.

And never once questioned it or tried to independently verify he was telling the truth, even when he asked her to bug the office of her boss who is the head of
FBI COUNTERINTELLIGENCE. And don’t give me he told her not to tell anyone, bugging John Boys office should have been a major red flag. If she “didn’t know” she didn’t want to know or is too fricking stupid to live.
I didn’t hate Elizabeth, she’s just the enemy, i didn’t root for her, I was rooting for Stan and FBI, (a lifetime of rooting for the Saints and pre 2000s LSU prepared me to root for the side that never wins
But Martha? I hated that selfish traitorous b*tch. Recall who is in Dante’s deepest pit of Hell.

Screwed her over? She should spent the rest of her miserable life in federal prison.
