Loosely caused. Sort of like blaming the decision to drive for a car wreck (sans impairment). Thomas Wayne's decision to take a shortcut led to his and Martha's death, but it didn't cause it.

Yeah he screwed up. But what he did didn't directly cause anyone's death. It led to it, sure.

But he says "we thought we were doing the right thing"

Therefore, the source of his guilt is not his going rogue. It was the mission.

So in all your technical wisdom the best answer you could conjure for what happened in this scene was "Just Because"

and intentionally not acknowledging the fact that it was moving from right to left and a spark hit the machinery that exploded that was caused by the fire in the other area lighting a spark.
