Movie theaters finally have something for which to be thankful.

Disney’s “Moana 2” cemented a new Thanksgiving box office record with $221 million over the five-day holiday frame, obliterating the previous high-water marks set by 2019’s “Frozen II” ($125 million) and 2013’s “Hunger Games: Catching Fire” ($109 million). It also stands as the biggest five-day debut in history, overtaking Universal’s 2023 behemoth “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” ($205.6 million). The film’s three-day tally of $135.5 million registers as the best start for Walt Disney Animation ahead of “Frozen II” ($130.2 million the weekend prior to Thanksgiving). Ticket sales for the “Moana” sequel were far above the early estimates of $135 million to $145 million.

And it’s not just the Polynesian animated adventure that’s keeping the nation’s multiplexes booked and busy. Universal’s adaptation of “Wicked” and Paramount’s action epic “Gladiator II,” both of which opened last weekend, are continuing to bring out audiences. Together, the trio of big-budget blockbusters are powering the biggest Thanksgiving period on record with approximately $422 million across all films. It shattered the previous benchmark set in 2018 with $315 million in grosses across all films, led by “Ralph Breaks the Internet,” “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald” and “Creed II.” This year’s attendance has massively improved from 2023, which was one of the worst in modern history

“Wicked” enjoyed another huge turnout, notching the No. 2 spot with $80 million over the traditional weekend and $117.5 million over the five-day holiday stretch. Director Jon M. Chu’s big-screen take on the popular Broadway musical has generated $262.4 million in North America and $359.2 million globally to date.

“Gladiator II” took third place with $30.7 million over the traditional weekend and $44 million over the five-day frame. Ridley Scott’s long-gestating sequel to 2000’s “Gladiator” has grossed $111.2 million domestically and $320 million worldwide so far.

I doubt anyone on here was thinking the sequels to Gladiator and Moana were going to fail or that a hugely successful play with a built-in audience was either.

I don’t care enough to bookmark stuff, but I know for sure there were posters talking about Moana 2 not being nearly as successful as projections and rejoicing in the idea.

I really don’t care either way tbh, I just find it interesting.

Makes the live-action Moana look like a smarter move now I guess.

Actually, most posters were commenting on the lack of promotions and was wondering why. If a poster or two was rejoicing doesn’t mean that posters was wanting it to fail. Why do posters continue to want to say shite in threads that is not true and who gives a shite. You are just as bad as the people your are criticizing.

I don’t have a problem with any of these three movies having a high gross.

All people ever want to see made are movies that appeal to the masses like they used to. Sounds like they're doing that, so why would anyone be upset?

Almost like the 50-100 regular posters here only represent 1/20000th of the populace and dont speak for everyone.

Post receipts or stop lying. The only movie that has a movie/tv board consensus prediction of having shite turn out is Snow White

There are 3 movies that appeal to the masses out in Theaters right now.

I can’t remember the last time that happened. Even Barbeiheimer required some nerds that loved Nolan.

I’m an avid movie goer and would say that normally I go 2 times a month. The last movie I saw in theaters before Gladiator 2 was Trap. That was early August to late November.

Good.

The movie-going experience should not die.

With inflation these high water marks should be constantly beaten.

Same here. Same movie too.

There hasn’t been anything worth going to see in my opinion until gladiator 2.

I love the movies. Especially when there’s something worth seeing .

Moana 2 just proves how badly Disney messed up with Lightyear

Parents are clearly dying to take their kids to “family friendly” movies, you just have to give them the option

We watched at this on FX over Thanksgiving.

I can honestly say it was just straight up uninteresting and bad. The “woke” stuff was a bare minimal. Just straight up boring with unlikeble side characters.
