Was watching reruns of a 90’s sitcom where the episode was about a television series being made about the characters. Started thinking about how many times that had been done before. Off the top of my head, I can think of three very famous series that used that same similar script. One from a 1950’s sitcom, one from a 1960’s sitcom and the 1990’s sitcom. Can you name them? Can you name other examples?

Update - Answers to the ones I was thinking of. Congrats

Seinfeld - The Pilot
Andy Griffith Show - Taylors in Hollywood
I Love Lucy - Hollywood at Last

There are probably more examples.

Guessing the answers to OP are The Honeymooners, The Flintstones, and Seinfeld.

“The Pilot” was on earlier today, so obviously Seinfeld is one.

Curb would be another with the exact same characters.

That was the 90’s one I saw today. I’m still thinking about two others. The 1960’s sitcom I saw not too long ago. I thought I had seen almost every episode but didn’t remember seeing the characters in the script go to California to have a show filmed about them. It was one of the later episodes and might have actually been filmed in the 70’s.

The crew from the Andy Griffith show had an arc where they were making a movie about Andy.

I want to say the Beverly Hillbillies did something similar.

The Mary Tyler Moore Show should be right at the top.

Eta: I didn’t read the OP close enough. Doesn’t fit because MTM and crew worked in TV news, not serial TV.

That was the 60’s one I also recently saw.

The 50’s one I saw was about one of the characters going to Hollywood versus a show about all the characters. I couldn’t remember the details and had to look it up. I’ll give a hint. One of the characters goes to the Brown Derby restaurant and creates a scene.

Andy Griffith is definitely one of them. Randomly watched that episode a few weeks ago.

Community had an episode like that where the show that was being made based on the characters’ lives was accurately predicting the future

Sgt Bilko did an episode about a game show. IIRC Fred Gwynne was the guest star

Every episode of Home Improvement -- Tim "The Tool Man" Taylor making "Tool Time".

Seinfeld's Kramer also did a show from the Merv Griffin set and had a actual real guest star -- Jim Fowler from Wild Kingdom.
