I love the fact that the show was able to do it in a way that wasn't contrive. It didn't feel forced or preachy at all. I loved the episode.

It didn't feel preachy and like I said, I like the idea, but it did feel a tad forced.

I get it, it's a TV show, but Sam had been wearing a shirt with Dubai Air plastered on it for the season before. Why wasn't his dad pissed then?

If this was reality, which it is not obviously, I feel like there are many conversations between Sam and his dad where it would've come up which company owns Dubai Air and why that's a problem. Instead, it took an ad campaign and then his dad basically said frick you son over a text.

Not much nuance to it.

I mostly agree that there’s a difference there, but again my point is that a lot of people shielded behind the logic that “it’s not about the cause, it’s about the entertainment and purity of the sport. Leave politics out of it”. The reality is people want opposing politics out of their sports, not all politics. I’m fine with everyone admitting that finally, but you can’t really have your cake and eat it too with that

I get what you are saying, but there are certain things that we should all agree on, whatever our political differences are. Displaying an American flag at a sporting event in our nation shouldn't be a political issue. Its literally the symbol of our nation. Do you think that they have this problem in most other countries? No. And exactly what political ideology supports a massive corporation deliberately shitting on a nation's land - one that already has had issue after issue - while paying their government to ignore it? It's not like they didn't buy enough carbon offsets or use windpower or some other sissy unicorn stuff.

But you just wanted to play devil's advocate as usual.

team sponsor as opposed to being in an advert for them? Having a Nigerian be your spokesman or main object of advertising is different than a player on a club wearing a jersey with the name on it.

that's my take anyway.

yeah, they fumbled that. At least a damn phone call...

From my understanding, it's not really Dubai Air that was doing it, it was their parent company and it had just started and was mostly being covered up.

Now I think most people realize that people only get upset about these things when they conflict with something they believe or care about directly, but still it’s a badge of honor for the people who melt about these type of things happening in sports. So we either have to finally admit that isn’t true or we can highlight the hypocrisy there.

I gotta admit, it irked me, and not because of ideological politics. More because I hate moral preening, especially when you've voluntarily undertaken the association by contract and you're being rewarded handsomely for it. SJWing aside, there is a tendency in our culture to dunk on the hand that feeds you, likely in an effort deflect blame from your association with it, and that's obnoxious IMO.

I know it was necessary for the show, so I'm not "upset" about it, but I did find it annoying. I suppose a press release that says "It's come to our attention that X,Y,Z, and therefore, the club can no longer move forward in our partnership with DubaiAir. We thank them for their support and hope this will draw needed attention...blah blah blah" doesn't make for as good an episode.

All that said, I thought that part of the episode was actually the best executed. The led tasso stuff was pretty terrible even for a show where some cringe is part of the charm. And as much as I love the good natured manner of the show, the sports fan in me got rustled at the dance party following a loss.

Just as AFC Richmond is not a real European football club, Dubai Air is not an actual airline tied to environmental destruction. However, that doesn't make Ted Lasso's Dubai Air controversy and the stand that Sam and his teammates take any less relevant to the real world. Professional and collegiate athletes have taken similar stands against powerful organizations, sponsors, and politicians in the past. This recently became an even bigger topic of discussion as athletes knelt during the national anthem and wore warm-ups tied to social justice.

As far as the Dubai Air controversy is concerned, Sam and his AFC Richmond teammates protesting Ceritihium Oil's practices should have massive repercussions on Ted Lasso season 2's story. Barring a change of behavior by Ceritihium Oil or Sam and the team cooling on their opposition of Dubai Air's parent company, it should be expected that AFC Richmond will lose its top sponsor. This will allow another company to come in and financially support the Greyhounds. The trailers for Ted Lasso season 2 might have even already revealed who this will be. Based on the support of Ted, Rebecca, and his teammates, though, everyone involved with AFC Richmond appears to be more than happy to support Sam's stance and bring attention to troubles facing Nigeria.

Havent posted in this thread yet. I should have known the M/TV board had people upset for political reasons.

I gave zero thought to that being a big deal. Didnt think anything of it trying to be woke or trying to make a point. I dont know how some of yall even enjoy watching TV if this show can bother you. This is the most light hearted show in the history of TV. Its goal seems to be just to let you sit down and be happy for 30 minutes. Thats what it does for me. Sams home country was getting shite on by the teams sponsor, he was justifiably upset and and didnt ask for any support but its a way to add to the character development of Jamie that he can actually be a team player. Thats it. Good for Sam for standing up for what is right and good for the team and Jamie for being team players.

It’s crazy they put that in the preview because it’s a massive contrast to their regular jerseys so it sticks out like a sore thumb

Because it's a reflection of real life, in some ways, and plenty of stuff in real life is annoying?

Nobody is calling to boycott the show over it. You're just trying to stick in some "I'm above the political fray" argument where it doesn't really fit.

So in your mind, anything that involves politics or environmental issues is woke?

Seems like a broad brush.

The corruption story could be recent.

I don’t really take issue with the protest itself. It seems like a worthwhile cause.

I just think the actual writing for the show is half as sharp as it was in season one. From the beginning where Ted is portrayed to worry for a second that young girl may be his kid (yeah right) to the Led Tasso abomination of a scene it’s just all too stupid and cheesy for me.

Dude, they put tape over the sponsors name. That's it. They didn't even show Sam's interview because they're not making a political statement. It was character development. Quit being a miserable person and looking for reasons to get annoyed.

Christmas Episode! Not gonna spoil anything as I just watched it after it dropped at midnight. I thought it was great. I think Roy's character has been way better since he retired. Hilarious!

Roy and Keeyley are killing it this season. And whoever said Keeyley is not attractive is out of their mind.
