I mean in the movie Ryan isn't even married to Kathy, they're just hooking up/pre dating.

they pretty much only had three goals when they made Sum of All Fears:

1. Put out a movie with a big Tom Clancy title
2. Have Ben Affleck in it
3. Have a bomb blow up a football stadium

that said, i actually like the movie just fine.

It would almost certainly have to be a miniseries if they were even trying to be loyal to the material.

Thats a good point, it would have been awesome if done right.

I’m sure that’s what they want us think. Political correctness was probably a big factor especially after movies like the Siege

Clear and Present Danger wasn't the best adaptation either and neither was Patriot Games.

I actually like the movie Patriot Games better that was my least favorite of Clancy’s books.

As in Tom Clancy or in general? In general, The Dark Tower is probably the best example of using the book title and then changing everything for the movie.

That movie is an abomination.

They made the movie the exact opposite of the book and the title doesn't make sense.

The nuke scene was good. Still i think how crazy that would be to do that at a football game. Hundreds of thousands lost instantly.

This was my favorite Tom Clancy book as a young teen (I read a bunch of them). And I was so excited when it came out on the big screen. Then so disappointed.

producers changed the antagonists of the story (Arab terrorists) to neo-Nazis because they felt like Islamic terrorism was overdone.

so they switched to a hardly ever used Hollywood villain like...

World War Z was about as bad of an interpretation as I can think of. The book was incredible. While I don't exactly hate it, the movie is pretty trash. I really wish DiCaprio's company would've won that bidding war and we could have seen what they did with it. Because Pitt's failed miserably.

Yes I'm still mad we don't get to see Yonkers played out on a movie screen.

great example. movie was fine - generic zombie fare - but the book was so great. could have been a great miniseries.

Jurassic Park: The Lost World was pretty different from the book, to my recollection.

I make it a point to never read a book and watch the movie for that book.

It never turns out well. I can't watch a movie of a book I've read. The movie ALWAYS comes off like a cheap, crappy play.

Just can't do it. I heard about Ready Player One. Bought the book. Book sat at the house a while. Movie was announced, and to be directed by Spielberg, so I knew I wanted to see that movie.

Never read the book. Still sitting in a box at home. Can't read it now. It would ruin the movie now. Decent movie. Very cool SFX. The first race scene is still one of my favorite action sequences of any movie.

you're not missing anything with that book. it was fine, but highly overrated IMO. plus had an entire section about masturbation that was the weirdest most out of place shite ever.

I don’t understand taking a popular book and then completely changing it. If the story is what made it popular, either do that, or don’t do it at all.

Agreed, but Hollywood just doesn’t give a frick. If it’s a known IP, they just want the title and character names. Then they’ll just insert whatever they want into it, expecting fans of the original IP to go see the movie regardless of what it’s actually about.

I have no idea why they even named it WWZ or spent money on the IP rights. Could have just made a zombie movie, because it had nothing to do with the book.

But it was worse than that though. The literal CGI tidal wave of zombies was legit stupid and awful.

If they would've stuck with the story and tried harder, it would've been better.

Deliverance will not let you down. It almost page by page follows the book.

Fight Club was as close to a book version as I've ever seen. Might as well have been the screenplay

Yep, I always felt like “Red Storm Rising” would make an epic movie, but they’d probably screw it up.

They could probably pull it off with AI/CGI now whereas at the time it would’ve needed an insane budget to do the battle scenes.
