Love it. Only 8 reviews but the reviews are fun to read on Rotten Tomatoes

I wasn’t impressed tbh. He’s still funny, but his latest specials seem lazy.

Huge disconnect between the “expert” critics and audience. I wonder why people don’t trust RT?

I don't know why anyone ever goes to rotten tomatoes.

I thought it was great.

The beginning story referencing that food guy who killed himself then spinning off into a story about his buddy with the life that spiraled to hell and then asking him - “why don’t you kill yourself?” was hysterical.

I gave up on Rotten Tomatoes a long time ago. It is comical the rating the critics are giving this. It isn't the best of his three newest specials but it is still pretty damn funny. Several times I laughed out loud.

Are people really getting their panties in a wad over 8 reviews on RT? If people weren't freaking out about this I wouldn't have even known that RT reviewed stand-up specials.

It was pretty fricking funny but the bit about killing heroin people went a bit too long. A lot of it was really good though. Solid 8/10.

The audience score is the one to go by at this point, big disconnect with critics and the general audience.

The best movies though are the ones where BOTH like them. Like 80%+ in both and you can rest assured it’s probably pretty good.

Sticks & Stones Audience- 99% vs Critics- 38%

Some context:
Only 8 people have reviewed it, 3 were positive and 5 were negative.

At least a few of the negatives seem to read like the issue is that what really appealed about Dave is missing from the special:

quote:

The set mostly misses the mark. And what is that mark? The truth. Chappelle remains one of the most vital, and certainly among the most daring, of standups... His latest hour is a setback.

quote:

"Sticks & Stones" isn't necessarily a failure, it just feels like Chappelle presenting half-formed material with few jokes that truly hit hard and stand out.

quote:

Sticks and Stones is designed to generate inflammatory coverage... It's a symbiotic cycle with no end in sight, and it's become the last thing a beloved provocateur should ever want to be: predictable.

Two reviews seemed snarky, but don't really convey WHY they didn't like it in their blurb:

quote:

Like dropping in on a rascally uncle who doesn't know, or doesn't care, how much he's disappointing you.

quote:

Sticks & Stones is terrible, and [Dave] Chappelle can only blame himself for that.

I'll try and find a moment to watch later this week.

I'm about the same age as Chappelle and always identify with his material. Dang he's starting to look (and sound) old though. Probably like me.

I grew up in a time where we understood the Gs, Ls, and Bs but these Ts are very confusing. The story with the car full of all of them was great.

I also liked how he picked on Atlanta a bit.

That opening that tied together Prince’s 1999, Anthony Bourdain and the footlocker manager was genius.

Best Chappelle showing since the Chappelle Show.

Could you imagine if the Chappelle Show came out of no where in this day and age? People would be rioting/protesting/sky screaming at the set everyday. Would be glorious.

This felt raw and completely authentic as if he walked on stage with random topics. Definitely his best since his early career shows.

Why? Because majority of people have their own issues to worry about so they don’t spend time idolizing celebrities and feeling fake sorrow?
