Man, that entire "Bob" storyline was gold. After going through the entire "who cares?" debacle with Cooper and Don's past, Pete finds out about Bob's past and just throws his hands in the air because evidently no one there gives a shite, so Pete is just gonna' make whatever lemonade he can out of the situation.

Pete’s entire life is built around the legacy of an elite NY family who lost their wealth during the 1929 crash. His parents end up broke/in debt by the end of their lives which leaves him with nothing in an inheritance. Through most of the series his unhappiness is due to him feeling like he is not getting what he is owed to him by birthright, and at the same time not getting the respect because he got where he is due to that family connection, so it’s both a blessing and a curse. “We gave you everything. We gave you your name”
Don is a walking breathing example of this unhappiness, because he came from nothing and used someone else’s name to get his start, but he ruthlessly used this leg up to make himself into everything he was, which far surpassed anything Campbell had despite being old money. It drives him crazy that no one cares about Dons past, and no one cares about his families past. At the end of the day they care about what value you bring and what you do with the opportunities given to you. I think through most of the series he’s constantly shooting himself in the foot by trying to either compete or one up Don. He tries writing copy in season 1, he sleeps with his secretary in episode 1, he aims to get Don fired multiple times, he eventually goes to California to seek the same happiness Don is chasing, even cheats on his wife and leaves her for a younger thing, and ultimately after begrudging respecting Don and seeing his true nature over the course of the season, he realizes what he’s been chasing is entirely vapid and empty and gets Trudy back to chase true happiness.
Really one of the best arcs of the show and something that ages better with each rewatch of the show

There's a lot of reasons to dislike Pete throughout the show and one that I heard from a lot of MM fans was how he raped or at the very least severely pressured the German au pair to sleep with him. I read an interview with him a while back where Kartheiser said the whole scene has the wrong vibe, the actress playing the German girl wouldn't reciprocate, no matter how many takes they did. She was supposed to be into it, so that whole thing comes off looking worse for Pete than it should have.
