Kennedy said she plans to make key decisions about the direction of the franchise in the coming weeks. But some things she already knows. While the “Skywalker” saga is ending, the company won’t abandon the characters created in the most recent trilogy. Additionally, she said, the plan is to move beyond trilogies, which can be restricting. “I think it gives us a more open-ended view of storytelling and doesn’t lock us into this three-act structure,” she said. “We’re not going to have some finite number and fit it into a box. We’re really going to let the story dictate that.”
I mean, it’s not like they treated 7, 8 & 9 like a trilogy....

They are failing with most of the big picture and failing to recognize their areas of success with SW. I think most people will agree that the most popular SW have been the original trilogy and those things which are most closely related to it, Rogue One and Mandalorian.
The sequels are set out in the future and have new characters that Disney created and have not done service to the original characters. Most don't like it.
The prequels were well before the original trilogy and were not well received by most.
Rogue One and Mandalorian are so close to the original trilogy and evoke so many things from the original trilogy that they are more popular. You would think someone at Disney would figure this out.
That Walmarts are filled with toys for ROS and there is not a Baby Yoda toy to be found speaks to how dumb they are.

I'll go with 600 mil, domestic and foreign, for a total just above 1.2 billion.
If the leaks are true (and I've read them) it might barely make $1 billion world wide. This movie, and pretty much every movie, needs a lot of folks going to see it multiple times to reach $1 billion.
I'm going to see it. But, if the leaks are true, it will be the only time I see it in the theater. If other folks are doing the same thing, it will do worse than TLJ, at least domestically. Just as an aside, I saw TFA in the theater more than twice and TLJ twice (once being at the dollar theater).
Kathleen Kennedy was a really bad fit for Star Wars from the get go. I know she had experience on ET and the Indiana Jones franchise, but she never had experience in helping produce any of the Original Trilogy or even the Prequel Trilogy films.

How do you explain Solo then? I don't think relying on nostalgia and continuing to whore out more original trilogy content is the answer. Whether it's set in the Old Republic era, the PT era, the OT era, or the sequel era, I think people just want good movies that tell a story with overarching vision along with memorable, relatable characters.
The sequel trilogy was poorly thought out from the very beginning and the new characters they've centered this trilogy around just haven't been given anything to really sink their teeth into. They also barely have any screentime together.

That is easy. The Last Jedi hangover. People, even OT fans were not going to see it because TLJ was so horrid.
Solo was not terrible. If it had been more insulated from the The Last Jedi it would have done better.

I didn’t watch Solo solely because of TLJ. I enjoyed the hell out of Rogue One and thought TFA set up an interesting plot for the trilogy
I ignored all reviews and spoilers of TLJ and allowed myself to form my own opinion.. and TLJ sucked arse.

I don't think the Last Jedi backlash hurt Solo all that much. It was the production issues and bad critical reception combined with movie going audiences just being incredibly uninterested in a Han Solo origin story.
I can think of about one million stories to tell in the Star Wars universe before an origin story for Han Solo. Nevermind the virtually impossible task of recasting Han and Lando meant that this project was screwed from the very start.

More likely it will be a Disney+ series.
They're already doing one for Cassian.

I stayed home because of TLJ. Although I was meh for a Han story I would have seen it in the theater if not for TLJ

You are very wrong. Scholarly articles have been published in academic journals about this. Solo was very hurt by TLJ backlash.

Movie goers don't care about critical reception. Many of the highest grossing films of all time were critically panned. Several of them were received much more poorly than Solo. And production issues? Come on. Most folks arent reading the trades and stressing over re-shoots, certainly not to the extent that it effects what they see.

Maybe for the Star Wars EU nerds, but the vast majority of the public only knows the movies. It should have been hard to screw up a Han Solo story featuring so many elements even the Star Wars novice would recognize.
And they absolutely nailed the Lando re-cast.

I never watched Solo because of how bad TLJ was.
It's been on streaming for a long time and i've regularly scrolled past.

I also skipped seeing solo in theaters and waited to watch it until it was out on streaming platforms. It was okay. I give it a 3/5, as opposed to Rogue One which is probably a 4.5/5

They didn't want baby Yoda to leak so no manufacturers saw it before the viewer did.
Crazy and will cost them millions in lost revenue but preserved a leak.
