slo: the despecialized project literally which was BY DEFINITION to update the 2006 release of SW DVDs is the same as the guys restoring the vintage 1977-83 films even though the 2006 release was completely different than the originals.

also slo: I WON THE THREAD

I do see the difference in coloring, but is it really THAT different to warrant all this effort?

I'm probably not upgrading from the bluray versions I have.

If there was ever an actual restoration from the real prints by ILM (or a comparable outfit), I may consider it, but Disney/Lucas will probably never let that happen.

its not just the colors; its removing the CGI crap Lucas added over the years, the Greedo-shot-first bullshite and essentially using only the source film from 1977 to make star wars...star wars again.

if you read that link i posted, it will help make sense of things. for those of us who dont like shite like the rifles being erased from the police in ET and all the other meddling and want to truly enjoy the moment from our childhood in its most authentic form, then yes; it does warrant all that work.

It's already been said but it has more to do with taking out the stuff George Lucas added and stuff Disney has added.

(skip to 10:15 if the video doesn't start there)

Yeah the Despecialized version takes out all that stuff and looks the best. That's why I really don't think I'm going to spend the money on a 4k upgrade that will likely looks worse. Now, if an official one gets released, like I said earlier, probably all in on that one.

I'm "ride or die" with Harmy until he says the 4K77/4k80 project is better (he has been complimentary).

It is a loyalty and appreciation thing, for me. However, I'm all for the 4k77/4k80 guys continuing work (they are also big fans of Harmy).

I consider the projects complimentary and not competitive. The alternatives that Lucas himself has tried to force on us are straight trash.

The closest to the original as we can get is best.

The only drawback is that things that look smooth and shiny at the original resolution look rougher the higher the resolution.

I can slap reshade onto a new AAA video game and make it look 50x better, crisper and sharper than what it normally does.

This doesnt look higher res. It looks reprinted with different filters.

I agree, I have the 720p despecialized that I think look better than the Lucasfilm released 4k versions available now.

I only watch the despecialized now, but I will download the new 70 mm 4k if I can find to sample.

That is because they're restoring film prints for theaters and not the shooting negatives.

The point of the project in OP is to replicate the theater experience of the time, which will not be high res. No clue why you'd do a 4K of that, but, whatever.

I have 4K77 downloaded, and it's phenomenally different than the commercial 4k discs or streams.

Short answer: it is actual Star Wars as it was released in the theaters, at the bestest quality you could imagine. It blows the official stuff away.

Longer answer-
Star Wars was filmed (on film, not digitally). The originals suffered and some were lost, or got damaged, etc. Then there were digital conversions, that didn't get things right (bad color balance, etc). And then there were some efforts at upscaling, as well as Lucasfilm inserting stuff and otherwise altering the originals, and at times not handling color balance correctly either).

Star Wars was NOT Episode 5: A New Hope. It was Star Wars. That was the phenomenon that got everything started. It didn't have Han shooting at the same time, or even first, in the cantina; Han is the only one to shoot. It didn't have random digital critters obscuring the scenes in Mos Eisley... just like Jaws doesn't have a digital octopus onscreen. It JUST WASN'T THERE.

So fans with technical knowledge, skill and understanding have gathered together basically the complete movie(s), in 35mm slide format, frame by frame. They have painstakingly cleaned these slides to get the best possible image, then scanned them in at 4k resolution frame by frame, in the original aspect, taking time to get the best color palette and balance, so that people don't look pink or yellow at times (as you can see when you watch the commercial versions). They then did the audio soundtracks, including 5.1 Dolby from the laserdisc versions.

I had posted a thread awhile back... if you saw Star Wars as a kid, your mind knows. The font and color of the opening text crawl has been redone a bunch of times, but you will recognize "original" when you see it, if you had once seen it in that form.
The blue "A Long Time Ago In A Galaxy Far, Far Away"... it's right. It's what I saw in 1977. Tatooine is correct, Leia is correct, everything is correct. The aspect is correct, you get every bit of detail onscreen (it's not chopped to letterbox or anything like that).

it's just so much ... cleaner. Star Wars has been modified and converted so much, it's kinda like comparing a couple classic cars. One (the commercial version) has been waxed, but hadn't been detailed beforehand, so you can see all sorts of blemishes and stuff, sun fading, etc. The other has been completely restored to as-new condition.
