Prior to Episode 8, regarding Rey's parents: “I’ve seen all of the theories… What I do know is that we’re going to make sure that that answer is deeply and profoundly satisfying, because Rey is a character that is important in this universe, not just in the context of The Force Awakens but in the entire galaxy, and she deserves it. So we’ll make sure that that answer is something that feels like it was—it’s something that happened a long time ago [in a galaxy] far, far away, we’re just telling you what happened.”

I hope one day when he's older we can have a real discussion about why it is in fact...terrible.
I saw Ninja Turtles 3 as a kid with my dad. I loved it and he said he has a feeling they won't be making anymore after this. I didn't understand why. He said you will when you are older. Sure enough, he was right.

quote:The Death Star wasn't just a weapon. It was the headquarters for the Empire and where everything was going to be based out of once completed. So it was basically a moon sized base that could move around wherever it needed to be and it could destroy planets if need be. It gave the Empire an instant presence anywhere in the galaxy.
Did you think this through? The Death Star is way more than 100 Star Destroyers in mass, so the resources involved are IMMENSE. And you don't have to build entire ships, just gather up asteroids and mount the correct size hyperdrive and a single droid to control it. A big rock at lightspeed would do the trick.
added- the concept of fuel is introduced in this movie... any guess what the Death Star's MPG was? Probably not that good, as in "clean out an entire planet's resources to make one trip" type of guzzling.
In the long run, it would be much cheaper than the alternative.

.... Did you miss the part where Rey saved the remainder of the rebellion after Luke stalled?

That was just anticlimactic though. For all intents and purposes, she didn't have that critical of a part in the finale. Other than swooping in for a few seconds to distract the Tie fighters, she disappears until the Resistance finds a back way out of the cave because they couldn't hear the icicle dogs, only to run into a pile of boulders so Rey can lift them from the other side.

I mean, I'd consider that a pretty essential part of the finale.

Her finale was with Ren on Snoke's ship. It was garbage writing. It's like they just had to find something for her to do after she battled Ren, so they give her a few seconds during the battle to distract the fighters and then bring her in as a deus ex machina at the end.

And why is that remotely necessary? The tunnel could have been already plowed through. Why shouldn’t she be facing down Kylo Ren instead?
It’s obvious what to do. Luke arrives in person and defeats the army in person using the Force, and Rey and Kylo Ren duel in the cavens, with Rey losing and Kylo Ren taking her lightsaber.

Outside of everything else, one of the most aggravating things is the mishandling of the Carrie Fisher situation.
I get that you had a finished script, and everything was basically ready... but Princess fricking Leia died before the release of this film in real life.
Carrie's iconic role, and the last role she worked on prior to her death, I believe. You had time to rework things to handle the character gracefully onscreen with a little editing.
Heck, I kind of wondered if there would be a "in memory to" mention in the credits, but I didn't see it. I also didn't really look that long.
These films aren't shot in sequence, and there are multiple takes. A lot of times the movie changes from what people think it is.
They could have changed things, just a little, and gave her a heroic death. Hell, like I said before, it wouldn't have been hard to swap her and Purple Haze out, let Leia go out like a champ, edit Luke into an intimate conversation on the ship with her (stick with closeups and creative angles), and go from there. If Purple doesn't want to continue in the series, kill her off at the base. I'm pretty sure the other actors and actresses would be down with it to honor her memory.

Might be the most disappointed I've ever been leaving a movie. What the frick Rian Johnson?

That was definitely done. It read something like "in memory of our princess, Carrie Fisher."

Rey isn’t a nobody. She’s a princess. Y’all will see...

There was a Title card "In Memory of Our Princess Carrie Fisher" right after the fade to the starfield.

This film has made me have a new appreciation for Gareth Edwards who I was previously critical of. Compared to Rian's decisions, it makes my minor gripes about Rogue One seem insignificant.

It's not that it was necessary in the least, but it did happen...Rey played a crucial role in the finale regardless of other ways it could have played out.
FWIW I agree Luke should have been in person, if he was just gonna disappear anyway

LMAO. I know. Its like they watched a different movie.

Just watched TLJ with my son. Alrhough, we enjoyed the movie, we left conflicted!
1. Did not like how they handled Luke. I wish they still would’ve had him in the Jedi mindset and not act like a little bitch.
2. What is up with Star Wars and the deaths of a major villains why are these deaths so lame and anti climatic?
3. Rey and her parent linage. I’m not sure if this is closed yet, but her parents should have some connection. Having them supposedly be nobodies, has no purpose at all.
With that said, it was enjoyable and special effects are second to none. I guess, I still would like the connections to the past movies and also wish Snoke would have been explored more and somehow would’ve been connected to a past Star Wars cannon character as well.

quote:Oh yeah, visually this movie sets the bar. Poe's super-duper piloting is still there, but it's toned down enough that it doesn't feel like watching someone play a video game on Easy Mode.

Soooo;
I did smile when Chewie was eating the cute bird hamsters.
I wonder if there's any possibility that Luke reappears in the next film. I know they said "he's gone" and felt "peaceful", but you can easily explain that away with "I'm Luke Skywalker. I was gone because I was in transit to here; now I'm here, and ready to roll".
I've read that he didn't expect to die even in the filming (the comment he made to Kylo makes that apparent), and with the mounting backlash, you gotta figure JJ will be trying to fix things.

Rey
It didn't seem like she was the main character in this one either. I loved her in TFA, but this one was more of an ensemble, which hurt her character IMO.

If anything, Poe and Leia were the main characters
