If this is indeed how George planned Jon's end to this particular part of his story I assure you Jon will be back south of the wall or his offspring shall because he is the last Targaryan and there are still dragons.

I've though it very plausible Jon would always end up north of the wall. The season could have been longer, but all this had been hinted at previously.
