good movie, but yes, it's mind boggling that it was nominated.

Why do you guys care which movie gets nominated for whatever award?
It has no bearing on your life.

Bc this is a message board devoted to movies. None of these movies have any real bearing on our lives, if you must be philosophical about it.

I still haven’t seen it, but after the #oscarsowhite twitter battle to defeat the evil forces of racist fascist Oscar voters, it was inevitable that there’d be at least one such movie nominated for best picture.

Do y’all think the message conveyed by the movie—from the intellectuals in this thread I’ve learned the movie pokes fun at white progressives—is what earned the best picture nomination? You think Hollywood is yearning for movies which make fun of liberals? Or was it just the acting, dialogue, etc that made this movie a nominee?

In other words, do you think if a white guy made this same movie, it still gets the Best Picture nomination?

It was a very well-written, fresh take on the genre that also fit in well with the current times. It was well-cast. The performances were all on point.

Daniel Kaluuya was a worthy nominee, and Betty Gabriel probably should have been nominated for Supporting Actress over Mary J Blige.

Depends which white guy. Seth Rogen? Doubt it. Spielberg with Hanks playing the girls dad? Of course

Hollywood has never given nominations strictly on merit so this really shouldn’t be a surprise

I thought it was a very good movie but the original screenplay Oscar was silly because it was just adapted from the Stepford Wives.

I really enjoyed the movie, I wouldnt mind seeing it again.

That being said, I was surprised it was Oscar nominated. I say that only because films who do well in the Oscars are always films that I have absolutely no interest in.

Art imitates life. It was nominated for Best Picture because the Hollywood Affirmative Action quota requires at least 1 each Oscar season going forward .....regardless of the actual quality of the work.

Blade Runner 2049 easily.

This is the reason I won't watch again.

Get Out was good but give me a fricking break. It'd be like putting Super Bad up for best picture when it came out.

The MPAA membership is growing a ton, and the new members don't value "Oscar bait" as much. Don't be surprised when Black Panther gets a Best Picture nom next year.

I think we're going to see a lot more comedies, horrors, and big budget tent poles getting noms (as long as they're the *right* kind, natch).

Bit of a late response, but I just watched the movie last night for the first time

Whether here or in the OT, I hate when posters just try to dismiss topics. This is a Movie/TV Board... pray tell, if not here, where else on God’s green earth should these grievances be aired?

Get Out was a good flick. The racial aspects of it had a little more depth than your average pandering Hollywood bullshite ala Watchmen, for instance.

I think it was a little more cerebral and Hitchcockian than people here give it credit for. Best Picture, naaah. But not a bad movie at all.

They really screwed up years ago allowing like 8 movies in the best pic category. Now it’s almost required to have that many movies nominated

I liked Get Out a lot, which seems out of step here.

It is more a psychological thriller with a horror edge than a straight horror movie. I thought Peele's followup of Us was much more a straight horror movie.

It was a terrible movie.

It wasn't a horror movie. Nothing about it was scary. It wasn't a dark comedy. Very little about it was funny.

The social/political subtext was interesting, in that it attacked the racism of upper middle class white liberalism but oddly enough, the most entertaining aspect of the movie was the stereotypical, loudmouthed black guy. Anything supposedly groundbreaking was a dull bore.

This movie had to revert back to stereotypical 90's black loudness to be even remotely entertaining.

I enjoyed it, but it's not "Best Picture" worthy.

I still think Peele is boss.
