Trailer
Beloved source material with a unique twist using a brilliant, complex sometimes morally reprehensible protagonist?
Nah, let's make Men in Black for kids.

I mean. . .other than Artemis being a know nothing of sorts. . .seems pretty faithful.
20 minutes of Artemis thinking doesn't play well on the screen
This looks more action oriented than the book, but you have to have that or it would be visually dull.

huh? they Disney'd it up and turned him from a sociopathic antihero kidnapper/criminal mastermind to some bland and clueless child protagonist....and what's with the Fowl family being allies of the fairies
From reddit, the casting call for the part. Show just how wrong they got it:
quote:
Artemis; must be 5'3" or below, any ethnicity but must have or can do Irish accent. At first glance Artemis could be mistaken for a rather ordinary child with little athletic ability, but his eyes reveal a flickering of intelligence; inquisitive and possessing both academic and emotional intelligence, he is highly perceptive and good at reading people; most importantly, Artemis is warm-hearted and has a great sense of humour; he has fun in whatever situation he is in and loves life.
I really hope this is true for their sake
quote:
A fan on Instagram had told a theory that the son would be Artemis THE THIRD and Colin Farrell would be Artemis the one we followed in the Book (and i fricking hope it’s that because otherwise they just destroyed a Master piece)

If that’s true....fricking Disney.

This would make me more excited for it. It almost looks like they tried to combine the original book and "The Artic Incident" with his dad being held ransom. It's just insane to think about the series getting to him working with Holly and Mulch without going through what happened in the first book.

I guess I'm just gun shy regarding YA adaptations these days. They always seem to dumb down the source material (Percy Jackson and Seventh Son being notable examples).
I probably wasn't going to see this in theaters. It's been almost 20 years since I read the first book, but I wish Hollywood would give younger people a little more credit.
ETA: The one (really two) wins so far that must be credited are the Lemony Snicket adaptations.
