People that think that there were seasons where the show was wall to wall funny

There was a point in time in the early 2000s where Comedy Central would show 1 hour versions of SNL episodes every day. It really distorted the perception of how many hit sketches there typically were. They also put out a lot of best of DVDs at that time.

So, a combo of good casts, repetitive exposure, and memory holing the bad stuff skewed the way people look at the show and still expect it to be all bangers all the time.

That was literally my first thought watching it.

I only watch videos of SNL and i’ve enjoyed a decent amount of skits but I dont think the duds make it through the algorithm

All seasons of SNL are on Prime, every episode ever made including the musical guests. Full shows no commercials

Funny premise...poorly acted.

I can't find the video, but my favorite SNL Winter Olympics skit was Chris Farley competing with Nancy Kerrigan in ice dancing, with Phil Hartman as Verne Lundquist doing the commentary

SNL has always been a numbers game. Even watching old episodes, there are a lot of duds per episode. Not all 20 skits are going to be bangers.

It also faces way more competition these days for good writers and actors than it did way back when. Lorne Michaels doesn't hold the grip on success for comedians he once did. He's 81 years old. His power is fading, and people know they don't have to suck his dick as much as they used to now that you have streaming companies throwing out bags of money to people to work in a less toxic place, or youtube views providing a comfortable living to self-producing comedians.

I guess there is still some prestige with being associated with SNL, but not near what it once was. Plus, how many of us are tuning in on Saturday night these days? I'll just wait until Sunday when the good skits get posted on youtube. That used to be the only thing available to people after the news on Saturday nights. Now, we have limitless options. The last time I actually watched it live was because my internet was out and all I had were bunny ears to watch tv.

the cold open skit with Jason priestly as the figure skater (again with Hartman as lundquist and Dana carvey as Scott Hamilton) was pretty good

Should have tempered expectations...I meant funny relative to what they've been putting out there in recent years. Nowhere near "Velvet Jones" funny.

Funny is subjective, but I find this to be a modern classic.

I remember... we tend to fondly remember the really funny skits, but every cast had some duds (some more than others, true, but still).

I mean, they had Steven Segal on and practically EVERY skit he was in was bad. The talent of the cast couldn't save it.

And everyone remembers the "makin' copies" sketches, but watching them again? They're stupid and not even remotely funny.

And 1000 yards to a mile. If only it were that easy.
5280 feet to a mile. A nice round number

Spell Fahrenheit... no one can.

Tyne was a good one.

If you think that was funny, then you must piss your pants when Kate McKinnon is in the "Alien Abduction" skits or the "Black Jeopardy" ones are viewed.

That was funny bc of Ryan Gosling breaking up. Otherwise, its a perfect example of the formulaic rut they've been in for a long time. It's a standard "odd man out" sketch wherein a group of (usually 3) people/couples consists of two "normals" and one "odd." They do this over and over and over and over... That cake baking thing (Eddie Murphy did one when he returned a couple of years ago)., A recent one with Euphoria writers and 3 of them or normal and one is offering crazy ideas. A sketch with Pedro Pascal where everyone is at a restaurant and one of them gets treated very differently from the others. A maid of honor sketch where two people give normal toasts but a third gives an increasingly unhinged toast. And there's a typical "rotation" that takes place. Normal speaks, normal speaks, odd speaks *insert laughter at oddball*.

Once you see it you can't unsee it and it becomes shocking how often that go back to that well.

The pre-taped skits with Shane Gillis have been consistently funny.

Oh it’s pretty funny. The Trump cold opens are fricking hilarious. And SNL has never stopped making fun of everyone. They used to roast Biden in cold opens too but he didn’t really do anything notable as president other than look old. Trump’s real life is an SNL sketch so the jokes basically write themselves.

You're describing about 70% of every improv sketch ever. It's not just an SNL thing.
