The last (2) season were created without LD. The article below goes into detail but the gist is the show started getting surreal / wacky and trying too hard to create memorable moments. The theory also is Jerry knew this which is why he stopped the show.

Agree, disagree?

I hated the series finale, nobody would be in jail for not helping during a carjacking

Damn, they brought up a bunch of episodes that are hilarious. Anyone that said the series got worse is just trying to be a hipster

Highly disagree. I don't think I would ever even consider it "declining", once it hit its stride somewhere around season ~3ish it was GOAT status all the way til the end. I mean seasons 8 and 9 are absolutely fricking brilliant.

lol, what a massive stretch.

Yeah, they brought up classic moments in Seinfeld history (frogger, kenny rogers, merv griffen) to try and reinforce their point that the show stunk at the end. Not a smart move by the author.

I loved the finale and thought it ended fine, with the last scene being completely perfect. I think the people who complain about the finale and say it sucked just had unrealistically (and impossibly) high standards for the show's end.

not stunk, just was different

but it kind of has to be different after 7-8 seasons of 20+ episodes

i mean Larry David was involved in killing off Susan so it got wacky under LD

At that time thought I saw a decline in that there were more silly interjections in some of the dialogue and slightly less clever plotlines.

Watching them today, though, I have a different opinion and it's all good. I really like the finale now even though at the time I thought it suffered in comparison. Larry David did actually come back to write the series finale.

Anyone who's never seen the Seinfeld reunion on "Curb Your Enthusiasm" needs to watch that whole season now. Jerry makes a comment about how they messed up one finale and they can't do it again. David says something like "that was a fine finale!".

IIRC pretty much the entire cast hated working with her and they basically had no choice but to write her off. I can't remember specifics (I'm sure I could google if needed) but all the main cast said she was pretty bad at acting, was hard to do scenes with, had zero chemistry, and was just a hassle to work with in general.

Also the 'killing' aspect may be a little out there but they couldn't just have george be married, that wouldn't feel right. George isn't a husband kinda guy, at least not for that particular era of time.

Killing Susan was awesome and fit right into the weird vibe of the show.

George: "Well, let's go get some coffee".
Jerry: "We had a pact!"

The “kill her off” plan was a reaction to a spur of the moment comment by Julia Louis Dreyfus where she suggested it and then they went “You know, that sounds like a plan!”

That is a load of fricking horseshite. 8 and 9 are my favorite seasons, and I'll meet anyone at sonic who says otherwise.

Larry and then Jerry stopped doing the show because it was an INSANE amount of work. They were doing 24 episodes a year filming in front of a studio audience. They didn't just sit back and write either. They were showrunners which means they had to oversee every aspect of the show getting made.

Holy shite was a stupid article that was. Every sitcom reaches a point where it can get stale after 100+ episodes at the end (The Office) or do something different to be funny. Seinfeld went the second route and it worked.

What season was Merv Griffin episode? Because that episode is one of the GOATs.

I just clicked the link and actually read the article. What a complete and total pile of manure. It's pretty much wrong on all counts and even contradicts itself from beginnign to end.

I thought the series was at it's best from season 2 to the last. I found it pretty consistent. I don't feel like there was a drop off or decline at all.
