Section 31 is a Star Trek attempt at Modern Star Wars.

The new Star Trek: Section 31 series, which the focus is on covert operations within the Federation, seems to stray far from the traditional Star Trek formula and veer closer to the tone and style of modern Star Wars stories. While both franchises share a science fiction foundation, the new Section 31 show aligns more with Star Wars in several key ways, especially in its focus on action, moral ambiguity, and shadowy organizations.
One of the defining features of Star Trek has always been its optimistic exploration of the future, where diplomacy, science, and reason are often prioritized over conflict. The series, especially in its classic form, is centered around the idea that humanity has evolved beyond war, prejudice, and greed. It’s a utopian vision of the future, where problems are solved through understanding and cooperation. Section 31, however, seems to emphasize a darker, grittier tone, akin to the underworld and morally gray narratives found in Star Wars stories like The Mandalorian or Rogue One. The concept of a secretive, shadowy organization working outside the official Federation mandates taps into a more cynical, anti-heroic narrative—a staple of modern Star Wars media.
Additionally, the Star Trek franchise has always emphasized intellectual engagement, prioritizing exploration and philosophical dialogue. Even in its action-heavy episodes, there was an intellectual depth that made it distinct from other sci-fi shows. Section 31, by contrast, focuses heavily on espionage, covert missions, and personal stakes, pushing it more toward action-driven narratives similar to Star Wars. Star Wars has increasingly embraced these action-focused, high-stakes missions with intense pacing, often sidelining the more reflective, philosophical elements that marked classic Star Trek.
Another shift is in the series' character development. Section 31 seems likely to center on morally complex characters who operate in the shadows, questioning their own loyalties and motivations. This contrasts with the traditional Star Trek ethos, where characters often embodied clear ideals, and conflicts were resolved through mutual understanding. The recent Star Trek series have been shifting toward more morally ambiguous figures, but Section 31 appears to take this to its extreme, much like the conflicted characters in Star Wars' underworld, such as bounty hunters or rebels.
Section 31 represents a departure from the intellectual, utopian values of classic Star Trek. It leans into the action-packed, morally ambiguous, and gritty narrative style found in modern Star Wars stories. While both franchises share a common sci-fi root, Section 31 is a more modern take that aligns more closely with the darker, action-oriented direction seen in Star Wars, highlighting the ongoing evolution of the Star Trek franchise toward a broader, more contemporary storytelling approach.
TL:DR -
A strong asian woman who is Hitler with tits tries to attone for her past by becoming a CIA space Buccaneer with a crew that contains a token black tough co lead, a waybe brady looking changling, a microscopic alien driving a Vulcan android, and some other red shirts.
It's a decent Disney Plus star wars show as it's slightly less ... bad that must star wars. But Trek fans hoping for the second coming of DS9 are left out.

I could enjoy this if they made it very mature and gritty. Think like the last few seasons of Seal Team.

That was a surprisingly good read. I didn’t know much about this show but it sounds interesting, despite not being like a typical Star Trek.

This was so bad I can't review it with any fairness. Just about every review I've read online have been extremely critical. If you're a fan of traditional Star Trek which I associate with TOS-DS9 I can't imagine many people with like it.
It's like they threw a bunch of shite together and tried to make a sad version of the Guardians of the Galaxy or Suicide Squad which has been mentioned.
Section 31 was created from the DS9 series and there were designed to be so secretive that they were judge, jury and executioner designed to protect the Federation as they see fit including from themselves. This movie version is a joke.

No.
What i meant was How could you root for a person that killed her entire family to become emporer and then made the only person who loved he a disfigured slave? She was regarded as the most evil and bloodthirsty Terran Emporer.
What i don't get was i thought Emporer Spock reformed the Terran Empire according to DS9. why was it still required for the emporer to kill her entire family to ascend?

I know when I look back at the original Star Wars trilogy, it's the moral ambiguity of the whole thing that really stands out to me.
Sigh. frick Disney.

The Vulcan avatar, especially the wife version, is now my most hated character in all of Star Trek. This movie is going to join Picard season 1 & 2 into the worst properties attached to the Star Trek name. I'm still in disbelief that I watched the whole thing.

This isn’t good. More Star Trek in the title than the movie.
Thank god Michelle Yeoh won an Oscar and the series was cancelled.

They've been trying to 'modernize' Star Trek since 2009.
Save for S3 of Picard, it's all been trash.
All of it.

Star Trek was historically never trying to reach a huge mega audience. It had a specific vision and appealled to a particular niche of sci fi fans.
Hollywood has been trying to turn it into a generic blockbuster scifi action franchise, which meant making it extremely loud, extremely stupid, and embarrassingly trend chasing.

Star Trek has always had its solid core of loyal fans. Problem is studios have bought into the model of dumping those loyal fans in order to try to chase a mythical, global market , or the “modern audience”. It’s a formula which is repeating over and over, to dismal results.
Doctor Who. Tolkien. The Witcher…
It’s like these studios are trying to remove what makes these franchises unique, to cater to the general population, which is having the opposite effect. The people who found and enjoyed these shows, did so organically.
Turning everything into generic sci-fi show is ruining modern entertainment..
