PG 13 started in 1984. So technically it wasn't a thing when these films were released. By all standards, poltergeist would be 13 or R today. I believe the cannabis use alone would put it in the category. Jaws would have probably been R too lol

PG13 didn't come along as a rating until after those movies were made. I think it was in the second half of the 80s

That’s a weird threshold for something being scary

Not really that weird. I get what he's saying. It's easy for most people to avoid the ocean, and shark attacks are extremely rare anyway.

That's a little different than getting attacked in your own bed by a supernatural entity that you don't know exists.

Yeah that’s why the movie has a set and was shown in a big theater, to give you the feeling that you are in the ocean and the shark IS real, like it’s a frickin movie guys

Getting attacked by a shark is infinitely more possible than getting attacked by a super natural entity.

Back then there was no "13 designation".

You had just three:

G - General Audiences
PG - Parental Guidance Suggested
R - Restricted, Children Under 17 Require Accompanying Parent or Adult Guardian

Red Dawn was the first movie ever to get the PG13 rating in 1984. Apparentlu Temple of Doom was considered, but ultimately got a PG.

I suspect it's no coincidence that the mpaa hit Millius first rather than Spielberg and Lucas.

Not even rated because it was a TV movie back in 1981...so it was easily deemed PG...TV movies were basically supposed to be acceptable for all.

This should not have been shown on regular TV.

Still to this day I don't know how it made it on generic CBS early 1980s Dallas/Dukes of Hazard TV.

..was it the clown that did you in?

I saw this movie when I was around 7 or 8, and that clown doll pulling the boy under the bed freaked me out. At the time I had a picture of a clown hanging on my bedroom wall, and after seeing that scene I couldn't sleep for weeks because I always felt that the clown in the picture was always watching me.

Was the main impetus for the creation of PG-13.

As for the topic, of those two - Poltergeist

Poltergeist is unquestionably the "scarier" movie. But Jaws affected me more I think.

Poltergeist likely initiated my hatred of clowns though.

When I was 5 years old Jaws was show on network TV for the first time. My parents were afraid that it would cause me to have nightmares or might be too much for me, but I begged them to watch it so they let me. I'm sure they thought I'd fall asleep during it but no, I managed to stay awake for the entire movie. The next morning when my dad was fixing my morning cereal he asked me what was my favorite part of the movie. I told him, "When the shark ate the little boy on the raft." I must've been one screwed up little kid

poltergeist.

You can't change vacation plans because of a poltergeist.

They're scary no matter how big the boat.
