But when their sexuality becomes their defining characteristic and is always the first thing that is mentioned when talking about them, I just tune out. Identity politics ruined Marvel, Image, and Vertigo comics, I would hate to see the MCU go down that road.
This has less to do with identity politics and more to do with poor/lazy writing.
Most writers are straight white dudes. So when you ask them to write a black, female, or gay characters - that becomes the character's "thing". Female characters are getting better, to an extent, but it is still lacking.
Another issue is that, because they make that the defining aspect of their character, it then makes it appear that any flaws you give that character are a critique on that person's race/gender/sexual orientation. If Miles Morales is only known as "the black Spider-Man", then if you give Miles some form of flaw to work from it will look like you're saying "black people have this flaw". IF Miles is "a Spider-Man who just happens to be black", then his flaws appear to be his own.
I'll give the writers a bit of a defense as well, though, as they have to CONSTANTLY churn out these stories at breakneck paces (unlike, say, writing a novel - typically). I imagine that makes it harder to know how much time you'll have to really flesh out the character as their own unique persona.

Chicago Hope did a great job with revealing that an established main character was gay. They didn't have him make out with a guy, or throw a fit, or take a stand... It just came up in conversation.
When the other doctors asked why he'd never said anything about it, he just shrugged and said that it had never come up before.

So why are they having to reveal this if it's already in the open?
To make sure everyone knows how stunning and brave they are.

Plus we are all already operating under the assumption that Danvers likes muff anyways.
Based on what?
If anyone is gay it's probably Valkyrie

Watch it be Happy. It's gonna come out that he had a thing for Tony Stark and he can't get over his death.

So in reading more, most people think it's either Valkyrie or Hercules (from an upcoming Eternals).

Im almost certain the gay character will be Valkyrie. Was she gay in the comics, or am I making that up?
Plus it allows Disney to push their gay character, without fans caring cuz everyone loves a hot Lesbo.
If Disney was to really push the edge and reveal a male character as gay, my best bet would be that it would be either Sam or Bucky. Although if Marvel really replaced Steve with a gay black man, that would undoubtedly be the end of the MCU. They could never recover.

The actress who plays Valkyrie in real life is a lesbian. Her character in Thor is pretty butch and self-sufficient and doesn’t flirt or get in any personal space with any guys in Ragnarok. (Unlike Black Widow or Betty Carter, etc who have shown interest in male characters prior to getting to 1st base, etc)
Brie Larson has said in interviews she would welcome if her character Cpt Marvel was written as a gay character and has openly pushed for a Valkyrie-Cpt Marvel ‘ship.
