It was a theme that Lucilla had been in love with Maximus for years but he had a wife and son and she married a soldier under his command.
When the kid visits Maximus in the Coliseum cell, Maximus looks around worried that someone discovered who he really is
They tried to retcon this scene as if he was stunned that he had a son. He was still trying to hide before Commodus finds out he's still alive. It's the whole reason his picks the helmet with the mask.

Not at all. That would weaken the entire revenge story. You have this entire story about him getting revenge for his murdered wife and son, having Lucius also as his son would just be dumb and mean that Maximus was also cheating on that wife he supposedly loved so much.

Calling it a 'Mad Max saga' was pure clickbait. The movie could have existed entirely without uttering the words or using Mad Max in the least.
