We can be honest and say that it would have made that much regardless of the lead. She was barely serviceable in that roll. It did her no favors and people weren't going to see her. It was the nostalgia.

^^^^^^^
This.

This is a Disney live remake of a movie that is classic. She couldn't fail.

There's no question money is not an issue. She doesn't need to ever work again like the Olsen Twins.

I don't think a lot of people are going to be broken up over her retirement. She's an average at best talent with a cute face and boy's body. Not a big loss to the entertainment world.

it’s definitely a year-round/day-long job like most professionals.

what does "year round" have to do with it?

They are contract workers. Like a builder. Or a boxer.

They get paid to complete a job. And they definitely work a full day during that period.

If you had frick you kind of money, wouldn't you?

Anyway, good for her. She does a ton of advocacy and work with the UN and other organizations so it's not like she's just retiring to nothing. If that makes her happy then she's got a leg up on several of her peers.

Her character in This is the End is how I imagine her to be in real life.

Again, I was being flippant. Obviously, it fits the dictionary definition of a job. But I was having a little lighthearted poke at the notion that thespians, especially film actors, experience work like regular people do.

Edit: Like how one might say “Boy, those Congresspeople sure do take lots of vacations. Do they really need that many vacation?”

Can an actor REALLY be said to be retired from a job?

No, it's like Daft Punk breaking up. They just aren't making music, you aren't really done til you are dead.

And contract workers don't retire, they just stop taking contracts.

She also, evidently, is making serious bank from her legal weed business in California.

What business? I was curious but couldn't find anything. Just some articles about her smoking a joint in london

If I made even like 10-20 million by her age I maintain nobody outside of maybe 20 people would ever hear from me again.

Rumor has it Emma Watson has "retired."

I've seen some interviews of actresses that I'm familiar with having seen their work. Phoebe Dynevor and Nicola Coughlin (Bridgerton) and Hannah Britland (Lovesick) come to mind. They all describe how difficult it is to go from audition to audition and face the inevitable rejection and to be looking for work. All three of those indicated they were close to leaving the business. And in fact Hannah Britland did quit acting (she now is in a Masters program in college and models). As hard as it is to conceive of a well know actress leaving the business perhaps Emma and others want to leave that rat race. And Emma likely has a large bank account so what does she have to prove?

You guys are being silly about this.

If your career is as an actor and you decide to no longer be an actor you've retired from acting.

Y'all's stance is like saying athletes don't retire they just stop taking/getting contracts.

She'll be back.

But if she never does, I can't say I blame her. Starting so young and being part of such a franchise, I'd imagine that really wasn't in love with acting, why bother?

I wish I could retire at that age. It’s prolly different for child actors who make bank early. I imagine the life isn’t all what it’s cracked to be as a youth. Zero privacy. Lots of pressure. Limited contact with more normal friends.

Plenty of examples of chick actors who crashed and burned in life and career.

Not everyone is a passionate maniac like DDL and Streep.

Or indebted and imprisoned like Nic Cage to forever make multiple films per year to fend off the debt collectors.

Just as long as she doesn't become an attention whore. Check out the title of this article:
