In the fight on Jakku when the bandits were attempting to steal BB 8. She took her pole and kicked "two" guys asses without breaking a sweat. It was obvious to me then that she had been trained.

Luke was defeated in ESB and defeated badly.
Did you not read my entire post? That's part of the reason complaining about Rey vs Ren is silly.
Luke defeating Darth in RotJ is a far more stunning upset b/c we already saw him get crushed in a previous duel.
There is no chance in hell that Ren is anywhere near Vader's level and he had been shot by Chewie right before he fought Rey.

Using that logic, Jyn was trained in the Jedi arts based on her fighting in the teaser. Neither Vader nor Luke were trying to kill each other in ROTJ. Had Vader not been electrocuted, he would have lived.

Do I get that they're marketing to the other half of the population? Sure. You act like they're marketing to a small minority.
quote:By your own repeated admission, it is a departure, and yes, it's for the sake of having a woman. But it's marketing posing as "social justice."
This isn't some departure from the Star Wars universe for the sake of giving a chick a role.
You're being told what to think by "elites" who think you are too stupid to vote and should just do whatever they dictate.
And BTW, how is the Finn character not as ham-handed an attempt at pandering to blacks as Jar Jar and the Gungams were? They "include" a black guy but is the the "greatest pilot in the galaxy?" No. Oscar Isaac got that one. Is he a general or a cool villain? No, he's the goofy comic relief. Poe even gives him his name like fricking Friday in Robinson Crusoe, for crissake.
But hey, he might hook up with the skinny white girl so JJ can get his de facto BBC cuckolding freak on, so I guess it's okay.

That is a stretch. She has been a scavenger and has had to learn how to defend herself. To say that is proof she has been trained as a Jedi is way premature. They very well end up making that be the case, but right now, making that connection is just trying to make what is available fit what you want it to be.

I agree the intent is annoying, and the more transparent the more annoying, but thats promotion, marketing, etc. I get annoyed at heavy handed messages within the movie itself because it takes my mind away from what's going on and doesn't service the story or characters
It's all just superficial. There no soul in it anymore. I guess I just have to say frick it and start watching more indy films.

Were they even any aliens in the teaser? They talked about having such a diverse cast yet there are very few aliens in a movie set in space.

quote:not necessarily, but I like that her "awakening" is left to our interpretation thus far
It was obvious to just about anyone that Rey has been trained as a jedi.
I don't know how luke would've picked up the telepathy trick between star wars and empire, the idea of the force as appearing to be instinctive is pretty interesting
so perhaps she was trained, but maybe she's that strong with the force, maybe during periods of duress it manifests itself as kind of instinctive behavior...who knows...it's good to have the force be a little mysterious again

quote:no I hate this about movies, force awakens gets a pass because it was a soft remake...it almost had to be. this wasn't the one to take risks, give us a same but different approach, that foundation being rooted in the OT is the best way to be introduced to the new characters
Oh look, another
it would've been really easy to give mark Hamill waaay more screen time, but they wanted to start this thing with new characters. if it were just the old cast on another adventure, yeah need to take some bigger risks
I have faith that the next one will do that...any kind of zero sum game and i'll be really disappointed. I'd like to see them not have a lightsaber battle in episode vii or at the least not have it as the climax, but it IS star wars so not a deal breaker. I know you don't like empire as much as the original, but isn't it cool that everything is different and new. new ships, new vehicles, new planets, new costumes, smaller scope, new characters.
i'll admit i'll be super fricking annoyed if I see someone in rogue one flash out a lightsaber

bullshite.
Having a female lead in one or two stories in an entire galaxy is not just marketing, it's being factual.
Not to mention a completely logical choice. The Empire is a male-dominated culture that views women as weaker and not worthy to serve.
That makes it a smart move to send in a woman as she can be overlooked.
People seem to forget that the Empire in the originals was all male, most likely all white.
The Rebels were a multi-racial, multi-speciel group led by a woman.

There is already a continuity error in this. The Death Star shield was already on the skeleton in Revenge of the Sith. In the teaser it is being put on.

Just want to point out it will be a female lead in 4 of the new 5 announced plus episode 7 star wars. And the one male is not a new character but rather fan service,
Everyone keeps bringing up the only 2 of 8 argument. It is not about the past but the direction they are going.
I feel like Kennedy has an agenda.
With that said Rey is awesome. And hopefully the new movie is good too.

Does anyone think they'll CG a young Leia at the end of this when they make the handoff, like what they did with Bridges in Tron Legacy?

also, don't we live in a male dominated society and there's nothing that supports women make better spies. logically speaking, a super attractive young woman is the last person i'd want spying for me because hot chicks stick out...it would be an advantage if I needed her to sex her way close to someone, but not as a spy within a government

I'm sure he does. Kennedy is just part of the small % of people that chooses the opposite sex when making his avatar for video games. Hopefully they'll make a good movie, and hopefully they'll let Vader awesome, I'm just going to be skeptical.

Except, you know, if what you say is true about them being pretty much all white males, then a woman would stick out like a sore thumb. Not what you want out of a spy.

Hidalgo has hinted that Thrawn would appear in the next season of Rebels
I don't know that he specifically hinted at Thrawn, although it is a likely possibility. I believe he said that they had something in mind which would be exciting for long time fans of the EU, and they finally figured out how to do it.
My first guesses were either Thrawn, the canonization of Revan, or Vader v. Maul, although the latter two could have easily been slipped into the Season 2 finale.

Oh really? Did not know that, I stand corrected on my video game analogy.
