watch the documentary on the making of the film - Coppola couldn't figure out what to do with the movie and the book is frankly no better

it is amazing how many people are so awestruck with the big imagery that they come away without realizing how little sense the film makes.

I should give a free pass to anyone who was impressed because they watched it while on acid I suppose

I have seen it and know all about the problems that arose. Jaws and Star Wars had as many production and creative issues. And Apocalypse Now makes perfect sense to me. Not a scene wasted.

The film made absolutely no sense to me the last 45 minutes. I don't get the praise it receives.

I wasn't saying watch it for a laundry list of what went wrong - I was saying watch it so you can realize the guy at the center of making the movie didn't think the movie made any sense

he did a brilliant job of overcoming that obstacle with strong visuals - but ultimately it just doesn't make sense

that is, unless you think the point of the movie is to be pointless

in fairness to Coppola the book by Conrad suffers from the same issues

Well he did say at the premiere..."this film isn't about the Vietnam War, this film is the Vietnam War."

I guess that was his admission it was a mess.

The Tree of Life (Malick)

If he wanted to put a Terrence Malick movie in there, he should have put in Days of Heaven, Badlands, or even The Thin Red Line. Tree of Life? Come on, man.

most war movies are pointless if you think about it.

The movie is an allegory for a one man's (Willards) slow descent into madness as well as an allegory for the shitshow that was Vietnam.

In the end, I believe that Coppola ultimately got the vision he wanted onto the screen

Terrible list IMO.

No Casablanca? No movies made in the past 2 decades aside from the vastly overrated Tree of Life?

How many of the listed movies have you actually seen? I'm gonna wager hardly any of them

I wouldn't say Raging Bull, Tree of Life or The General (though it's surprisingly good) have a strong argument to be on this list but the others do.

Really? Raging Bull was Scorsese's best movie. Scorsese direction in that movie was jaw-droppingly good and Deniro gave his best performance ever and one of the greatest acting performances in film history in that movie. It certainly has a strong argument to be in the top 10.

that's kinda odd because it wasn't even his favorite movie that year...

...or second favorite...

Well, he had to pick a recent movie and maybe after Tree of Life marinated in his mind for awhile he grew to like it more. Honestly, it wouldn't be my choice since it isn't even my favorite Malick movie.

Apocalypse Now and 2001 are WAAAAYYY overrated. Raging Bull is a bit as well, IMO, and I'd say Scorcese's 4th best film behind Goodfellas, Casino, and GoNY.

Apocalypse overrated - yes. 2001 overrated - frick no!

2001 is one of the most brilliantly shot movies of all time, period. If anything it is underrated. Should always be a top five movie.

I wouldn't say they are overrated. But I am too feeble minded to realize their awesomeness.
