Apocalypse Now and 2001 are WAAAAYYY overrated. Raging Bull is a bit as well, IMO, and I'd say Scorcese's 4th best film behind Goodfellas, Casino, and GoNY.

Interesting.

He changes it all the time as he's mentioned depending on how he feels that year or is looking for some films to get more attention.

Aguirre, Wrath of God (Herzog)
Apocalypse Now (Coppola)
Citizen Kane (Welles)
La Dolce Vita (Fellini)
The General (Keaton)
Raging Bull (Scorsese)
2001: A Space Odyssey (Kubrick)
Tokyo Story (Ozu)
The Tree of Life (Malick)
Vertigo (Hitchcock)

I wouldn't say Raging Bull, Tree of Life or The General (though it's surprisingly good) have a strong argument to be on this list but the others do.

Of all of his: Citizen Kane, Vertigo and Aguirre are tops for me; with Tokyo Story, Apocalypse Now and La Dolce Vita just below.

Im actually fine with Raging Bull on the list. It's always been underrated IMO even with all the love it gets.

GTFO

I like Ebert, and consider his recommendation the gold standard, and a good indicator of a films I'll enjoy, but every once in a while he throws out a stinker like this. He also recommended "The Devil's Rejects", which I thought sucked balls.

I expect Coppola's "The Godfather" to be on this year's S&S list again, and it may even move higher. It is a great film. But "Apocalypse Now" is a film which still causes real, not figurative, chills to run along my spine, and it is certainly the bravest and most ambitious fruit of Coppola's genius.

You should be ashamed of yourself for replacing Ozu's movie with The Room.
