I think this came out yesterday, has anyone checked it out? 8 episodes:

trailer

quote:

In 1960s New York, Tom Ripley is hired by a wealthy man to convince his wayward son to return home from Italy. But Tom's introduction to Dickie Greenleaf's leisurely life abroad "is the first step into a complex life of deceit, fraud and murder"

quote:

Ripley is an American psychological thriller television series based on Patricia Highsmith's 1955 crime novel The Talented Mr. Ripley. Starring Andrew Scott as Tom Ripley, Johnny Flynn as Dickie Greenleaf, and Dakota Fanning as Marge Sherwood, the eight-episode limited series was created, written and directed by Steven Zaillian. It is the first serial adaptation of Highsmith's novel

I watched the first episode. I really liked it. It has a pretty cool vibe the way it's done.

Hopefully the story continues to be good.

Only movie I've ever been to where half the theater walked out midway due to sheer boredom. Is what it is.

For The Talented Mr. Ripley? Boredom?

It’s an awesome movie. The aesthetics alone are enough to keep someone entertained. I understand that the hoi polloi need superhero costumes and explosions, but damn, that’s sad.

Andrew Scott is up there as one of my favorite actors. Doing a rewatch of Sherlock right now (fiancé never saw it in its initial run) and he’s so delightfully evil.

Makes me think he’ll be excellent in this. It’s on the list.

LOVE the movie

Weird they decided to do the series in black and white. Also, the main guy in the series seems much older than Damon’s character was in the movie

I thought the black and white was a nice touch, especially the use of light. Italy was beautiful in this series. Enjoyed this.

Just one episode in and I am liking it. Beyond the B&W it has a very art-house feel to it. Someone with a short attention span probably won't make it through the first episode, well unless you like stairs. It had a lot of shoe leather in the first episode and a modern theatrical release editor would have left most of it on the floor. I actually like that because I am constantly looking for meaning and one of Chekhov's guns in every scene.

I’m unsure why you’re getting DVd. Your statement is absolutely true. There was widespread criticism of this movie, because people said how incredibly boring it was.

Personally I liked it a lot. But yeah, it was not well received. I held off on watching it due to all the criticism, and then one day my class was canceled so I said frick it and went to see it. I understood why people were bored, but I thought it was a very good film.

I was there, it what I saw. Later I saw and enjoyed it, but at the time it just wasn't going over at the theater.

How do you know his statement is “absolutely true”? Were you there?

The movie was critically acclaimed. I have no doubt that a lot of people hated it. Again, most people have shitty tastes.

The poster himself says that he later saw it and thought it was ok. However, he was apparently letting the people around him in the theater influenced his opinion during that first viewing. That’s a little odd.

Was on a date, she hated it, yes it influenced me, the movie wasn't the end game lol...but yeah lots of people left. Is what it is, happened lots of places as it wasn't exactly loved by mass audiences

Totally true statement. I was re-engaged in the travel related suffering that often occurs in foreign countries in E1. The NYC sequence early bored the shite out of me.

Back to the stairs, why does someone that lives in NYC suffer so much with them from that era?

It helps a lot to quasi-know at least one romance language so you can sort of get what is going on when he hits Italy. Even with subtitles, you're just getting Italian with the locals.

Movie is GOAT. I’ve watched it at least once every summer since it’s been released. I’ll be starting the series sometime this weekend I think.

Am I the only one who didn’t enjoy the Netflix series?

To go from Phillip Seymour to some non binary try hard was hysterical. I enjoyed the black and white and some of the pacing/vibe but just a downgrade from the movie. It’s just a story that doesn’t merit a series.
