It sucks. But this is demonstrably false.

Having Darth Maul all throughout the prequels would’ve saved them, or at least have him in Ep2. I found it harder to watch.

The pod race was a Disney ride and Jar Jar was a Disney character (want to be). Lucas had been trying to entertain children, teens, and adults since Return Of The Jedi.

I believe the pod race scene was Lucas' homage to the great chariot race in Ben Hur, but agree it sucked up way too much time.
I can only conclude that Portman was directed to deliver her lines in an expressionless monotone.
There are giant black holes in the logic of the stories all the way through. The entire thing was inspired by "Saturday morning serials", in which the hero was always left in a cliff-hanger situation so people would tune in next week.
(Note: My user name was not chosen with reference to this film, but was the nickname of a sports car I owned.)

I forgot to address JarJar. He was obviously bad but I at least got what they were trying to do with him. They just went WAY too far in their attempts to make him goofy and accessible to kids. JarJar toned way down could have actually worked well I think.
I still think Jar Jar was supposed to be a drunken monk type Sith but George wussed out.

You’re going down a path I cant follow. You’re breaking my heart!

Dialogue was the biggest issue at the time. But the CGI issues have become more prevalent. With CGI characters and environmental interaction in movies today, they have a host of stand ins.
Look at Ewan McGregor interacting with anything CGI in The Phantom Menace and Clone Wars compared to his interactions with Pooh in Christopher Robin. It makes a world of difference for the actors.

This scene still makes me very untrustworthy of what’s in the oceans.
Meesa thinks it’sa cwaaazey down dair.

The pod race scene is one of the best scenes in any movie to test out your surround sound.

I’m telling you, there are some bad Star Wars movies, but none are as unwatchable as AotC. It’s the only sci-fi movie I’ve ever fallen asleep during.

Natalie Portman is a great actress but yes she performed absolutely poorly in that trilogy. Probably because she didn’t give a shite and just wanted the paycheck. But the kid takes the cake for worst actor in pm.

... for a fact, can act. We've seen her do it.
Ditto for Liam Neeson. They just didn't act in this movie. You can almost certainly blame it on the script and director, particularly a director who was more concerned with having his fancy coffee and sleeping in his own bed every night, overreliance of CGI backgrounds/resting on his laurels than actually doing all the hard work of telling a good story through film.
And all the prequels were like that, not just The Cartoon Menace - Send in the Clones and Revenge of the Whiny arse Punk as well.

While Revenge of the Sith on its own terms I’m fine with, the moment Anakin goes to Vader was obvious from the start: Anakin walks in on Mace Windu and Darth Maul fighting and he decides to kill them both and blame Windu’s death on Maul, only to be caught in the act. Anakin needed to actively choose the Dark Side rather than be tricked into it.

Completely agree. AOTC is one of the worst films I've ever seen.

Yeah, between that and Jar Jar the one major flaw in that scene. Other than that pretty well shot.

My biggest gripe may be that the pod race is such a giant waste of time

I do really like the intro to the movie, the first act or so. I don’t know why but them traveling through the planet still resonates with me and feels cool.
Man that’s weird to me because the pod race is infinitely better than the Gungun City scene imo.
That was like 15 minutes in and honestly it threw off the whole feel of the movie for me. You could tell it was going to be nothing but cartoon CGI, laughably bad CGI to boot, and just set a bad tone after all of the anticipation for the movie.
This beginning and the climactic battle against the droid army and in space was just such awful bookending (granted the Maul saber battle mixed in made the ending not nearly as bad as the beginning because it’s awesome).

Most of the pod racing scene was done with old school effects but we’re not ready for that discussion.

Here’s what I remember of the plot from AotC:
Something something Count Dooku exists now
Politics yada yada, Obi-Wan’s talking to CGI characters
There’s a clone army...oh shite, there’s young Boba Fett!
Blah blah blah Anakin’s in love
Their all chained up, big fight, credits.
Honestly, I don’t even remember what the first scene is after the crawl.

I've gone on my "TPM was clearly written for Anakin to be 16 years old" rant on this site more than once, so I won't do it again. But you have got to assume that poor Natalie Portman read the script ahead of filming and had gotten a feel for the character of Padme: a young queen trying to do the best she can in a difficult situation, who meets a mysterious badass far below her social station and finds herself developing some confusing feelings for him - feelings that would no doubt be further explored in the remaining two films.
Then she shows up on set and finds out that the "mysterious badass" whom she is developing feelings for is Jake goddamn Lloyd and he is six fricking years old.
I would have probably been in shock too.
