It’s been forever since I’ve watched it start to finish. While I do think it gets too much hate sometimes, I can say that it’s pretty objectively not a great movie.

But man oh man, Natalie Portman turns in one of the worst actor/actress performances in film history in this movie. And critics often say that it’s due to the dialogue, but that’s complete bullshite IMO. Because everyone else in the movie is speaking the same shitty dialogue, and none of them come even close to how bad she is. Not even Jake Loyd. And several even turn in decent performances despite what they were given (Neeson, McGregor, for example). But Portman is just so wooden. Every line of her dialogue sounds exactly the same...same pace, same tone, etc. Even her facial expression never changes to show any sort of emotion. None.

And don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying she’s a terrible actress, because clearly she got better (and won an Oscar right?). But in this movie she is legit awful.

I also forgot how much this movie overly relied on CGI. It’s noticeable and it’s bad. And while some of the CGI looks okay (like Yoda for example), it just feels like they are standing around trading lines in front of green screens (and that feeling is far worse in AotC).

My biggest gripe may be that the pod race is such a giant waste of time. That’s honestly one of the reasons I wanted to rewatch this, and it stands out how much time is wasted there. All to have Anakin end up in Quigon’s care and show that he has some Jedi characteristics. In a two hour and 15 minute movie we spend like an hour or more on this race and things surrounding it. Just feels like Lucas wanted this scene and wanted it in there no matter how long it took from the run time. And I didn’t hate the race scene (even though it’s quite ridiculous at times), just the time spent on it. Felt like they could’ve cut it in half and still gotten the points across and used more time in other spots.

I do really like the intro to the movie, the first act or so. I don’t know why but them traveling through the planet still resonates with me and feels cool. And even setting up them meeting Anakin feels okay. I just hate how much time is wasted after that.

And the last 20 minutes or so feels like vintage Star Wars. And the Darth Maul scenes are just fantastic and save the movie honestly. I never was a huge SW nerd but I remember watching this in theaters and losing my shite when he broke out the dual-sided lightsaber. That fight is just cool and awesome.

And the soundtrack is pretty damn solid IMO.

Anyway, not a great movie but pretty entertaining in parts and even underrated in others. And it will always have brownie points with a lot of people for simply bringing SW back into the mix again. I’m sure this will get downvoted since I am saying positive things about the prequels and that’s forbidden. But I have always liked this one more than most I guess.

Does anybody else out there actually like this movie like I do?

I don’t HATE the movie but if Lucas would have focused on the story instead of “look what we can do with CGI” those movies could have turned out so good.

Your last paragraph hits the nail on the head.

I was born in mid-80s so the original Star Wars films weren’t nostalgic. The introduction of the PM was the hook to get me pulled back in and got me interested in the world. I’m sure the latest movies from 2015, 2017, and 2019 also helped do the same to those born later than myself.

PM didn’t have to be mind blowing. Just good enough to pull me in.

I think it's the worst thing Star Wars has ever created. Not even Darth Maul can make me want to watch it again.

I liked the podracing scenes and most of the stuff on Tatooine outside of Jar Jar stepping in poop and tonguing the Podracer...

But so much of the movie makes no sense. The overreliance on CGI is real bad in this one (but gets worse in the next two).

I agree tho, Natalie Portman is so boring and wooden in this movie. She is legit awful for most of the prequels with a few decent deliveries in RoTS but I still think she was subpar in that one. But she has shown she can act. She was great in Leon and Beautiful Girls before she was cast in Star Wars so she had the talent...and she went on to perform well in movies in the future.

Which makes me blame the directing...

wasn't that added after the fact?
he was a really bad puppet when the movie first came out. Like he looked worse than the original Yoda by a long shot.

Care to explain why?

You think it’s worse than AotC even?

I'm confident Lucas leaned too far into the 'soap opera' in space style and ruined Portman's acting

I forgot to address JarJar. He was obviously bad but I at least got what they were trying to do with him. They just went WAY too far in their attempts to make him goofy and accessible to kids. JarJar toned way down could have actually worked well I think.

In Natalie Portman's defense, she was 15 when she was cast and 16 when principal photography began. Child actors aren't nearly as good as their adult counterparts and plus she was acting in front of green screens in an era where that wasn't yet common. Nowadays acting in front of a green screen is second nature to actors in big-budget action tentpoles. But to an actor in 1997? That was something almost never heard of before.

What you'll find with the prequel and sequel trilogies is how much effort was put into new or expanded aspects of the universe that serve absolutely no purpose.

Example:

Empire Strikes Back - Luke in his early 20s ventures to Yoda who tells him he's too old to be trained but eventually relents and trains him.

Phantom Menace - Lucas invents midichlorians to explain how powerful 7 year old Anakin is and introduces this entire council of Jedi to interview him all to determine that he is, you guessed it, too old to be trained but relents and allows Obi-Wan to train him anyway.

If Anakin is too old at 6 or 7, why not just write him as 16 or 17?

If Anakin is going to be trained anyway, why not write him as too powerful not to be trained, a dangerous threat to the galaxy on his own and perhaps likely to be found by the Sith?

Instead we're just rewriting the same crap from before but in dressed up in new, inventive stupidity.

I’m blaming Lucas for that. Portman by that point had put in a spellbinding performance in Leon the Professional, so she had the chops.

To be honest in retrospect I do find the podrace to be the best part of the film, but that’s probably just me.

Outside of the Rey and Kylo scenes, the Last Jedi makes the Phantom Menace look like Citizen Kane. Plus I also think Episode II is worse than I.

There were some good elements to it. I remember Thinking it was pretty badass when Qui gon shoves his lightsaber in the blast door and starts to melt it. That character overall was really good. Obiwan kinda got shafted until the final fight with Maul. The kids were all terrible The Jedi council came off as arrogant asshats, but maybe that was intentional.

I still have no clue if Sidious actually wanted Padme dead. If not, why send Maul after her and the Jedi? If so, I don’t get why. The blockade of Naboo to get sympathy and make a play for chancellor is clear, but was this child Queen a threat to his plan in some way? Did his plan go off “perfectly,” or was he improvising as he went along?

It is a waste of time, but it was interesting and showed off Anakins latent force ability.

I liked that as a show of his skill as a pilot way more than the ending when he blew up the giant donut on accident.

Seconded.

Also the Rise of Skywalker had Finn riding a space horse across a star destroyer. I have loved SW all my life, but I was openLy mocking that turd sandwich In the theater.

To me the phantom menace has both the best and the worst of the prequels, and it’s the only one that has much re-watchability in my opinion. I was younger when it came out and a huge Star Wars fan at the time, so I no doubt have some nostalgia going on for that movie even though I knew how badly people were let down by it at the time.

imo, the best things about Phantom Menace were the teaser poster and the Weird Al song.

The pod race scene feels like it’s the climax of the movie.

Attack of the Clones makes this look like Empire though.
