Modern, it has to be Cruise. When you look for people to put above him, nobody has the staying power. He was huge before Brad Pitt, and he's still A-list today.

All-time, gonna say Cary Grant, Humphrey Bogart, Jimmy Stewart make that.

Played Rear Window for my 18 year old and 13 year old sons this past Saturday. Both loved it, but especially the 13 year old. Completely captivated by it.

One of my favorite Cary Grant movies is "Houseboat" where he plays opposite Sophia Loren.

And I wouldnt necessarily call it recency bias - the man has been staring in movies for literally 40 years with an insane batting percentage.

I certainly would, in the sense that movie stars haven't existed in this century the way that they used to. Tom cruise was a dominant movie star that could command his salary and choice of projects, and could propel almost anything to success from roughly 1986 to 2002. Since then, he's been choosy about his projects, has made a bunch of blockbusters that people respect, and proven that he can't open just any movie.

Some would argue that he keeps making mission impossible movies because they're his only guaranteed profit-earners. A startling percentage of his blockbuster-hopeful movies have had disappointing box office returns - Valkyrie, knight and day, the mummy, oblivion, edge of tomorrow, the jack reachers, American made (maybe more of an Oscar hopeful), rock of ages.

Being in only blockbusters doesn't make you the biggest movie star ever. The general public has to go see those blockbusters, too.

Don't know if I'd call The Philadelphia Story a romantic/screwball comedy, but to each his own.

Are you mixing it up with Philadephia (Hanks/Washington)? The Philadelphia story is definitely a romcom.

He takes his time now because he actually produces his own movies with his own production company - specifically doing so with the Mission Impossible movies.

That's why he keeps making them.

Right. That didn't explain the consistent commercial misfires.

I think the 2 biggest stars of all time are Wayne and Cruise in that order.
