Not saying that there aren't resumes out there as good(or better), but I'd nominate this guy.

Romantic/Screwball Comedies:

Bringing Up Baby, His Girl Friday, The Awful Truth, The Philadelphia Story, Topper, The Talk Of The Town, Arsenic and Old Lace, Mr Blandings Builds His Dream House, The Bachelor and the Bobbysoxer, My Favorite Wife, Holiday, The Bishop's Wife, Mr Lucky, Operation Petticoat, Monkey Business, Father Goose, I was a Male War Bride, People Will Talk, and That Touch of Mink.

Action/Adventure:

Gunga Din, Only Angels Have Wings, Destination: Tokyo, Blonde Venus, and The Eagle and the Hawk.

Suspense/Drama:

North By Northwest, Suspicion, To Catch a Thief, Charade, Notorious, Penny Serenade, and In Name Only.

The movie star "resume" answer is Tom Cruise.

It's always Tom Cruise. He's literally been in 40+ blockbuster movies. Not just movies...blockbusters. That's insane.

There are only 2-3 people that have movie resumes that successful and long

Tom Cruise
Clint Eastwood

...

ETA: people would be tempted to add Brad Pitt and Leonardo Overactor but if you actually look at their block busters where they unquestionably carried the movie - the counts are dwarfed by Cruise.

Don't know if I'd call The Philadelphia Story a romantic/screwball comedy, but to each his own.

I don't know.

But I do know The Rock is trying to break the record for biggest actual resume of all time.

And while you're probably right, the argument will remain as to exactly when that was true - sometime between the first Mission Impossible and Eyes Wide Shut?

And who was it before Cruise? For the 80s, you had action titans Sly, Arnold and Bruce Willis all kind of jousting around, with Eddie Murphy thrown in the mix - all these guys were displacing the only guy from the 70s with any sort of claim on the crown - Burt Reynolds.

Clint Eastwood

I'm just not sure Clint was ever in the discussion because of how much of his important work is behind the camera.

On the other hand, before Burt Reynolds, who was the biggest movie star in Hollywood and why was it John Wayne?

Not The Philadelphia Experiment, you philistine, The Philadelphia Story - Katie Hepburn, Jimmy Stewart, Cary Grant - that was 100% a romantic/screwball comedy.

100%

I mentioned clint Eastwood because of the sheer volume and quality of his work (which i assume makes up for his lack of true movie star status). His resume is, by far, the most complete and comprehensive Hollywood resume in history.

I think the question proves my point.

Cruise, even as a young buck, was an A-List movie star by the mid to late 80's even with that competition.

I think with Cruise, he just truly understands what makes movies great and he owns his own production company. So he can take his time and produce high quality films at his pace with his vision.

The more interesting debate is who is 2nd behind Cruise (assuming we take the Eastwood argument out)

Of all time? Clearly John Wayne.

Wait...seriously?

ETA: I'm not concerned about the upvote/downvote thing...other than to ask, have some of you really not seen ANY of these movies? You've NEVER seen any of the Hitchcock stuff...North By Northwest? Notorious? To Catch a Thief? I find it amazing that at some point people who like movies would not have found old Cary Grant comedies like Arsenic and old Lace, Bringing Up Baby, Philadelphia Story, etc...but if you're not a fan of old comedies than I could see avoiding those. But Hitchcock classics? What kind of movies do you like if you've never seen North By Northwest?

Second is probably Harrison Ford.

Indiana Jones, Star Wars, Jack Ryan movies, solid action/suspense flicks like Air Force One, Blade Runner, The Fugitive. Throw in some good dramatic work in Witness, The Devil's Own, etc.

Yup...great movie.

Hell...I even love the musical remake from a few years later with Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby and Grace Kelly called High Society.

Harrison Ford has Star Wars and Indiana Jones overlapping. I feel like those two trilogies have more staying power than anything cruise has ever really done. I’ll buy Cruise as 1 but I think Ford is 1a.

Recency bias, but yes you are correct in mentioning him. This is a topic that is very difficult to nail down to just one actor. I think there is a handful of actors that contend for this title, none of which would outright win it.

Cruise
Eastwood
Grant
Stewart
Wayne

Humphrey Bogart needs to be in this list as well. During their times each of these actors were dominating the big screen.
