Red Sonja has ALWAYS been a badass. Just like Conan, we're introduced to her already being a bad arse - we don't get her origin story until 2 years after her debut.
Fun tidbits:
Red Sonja has (sort-of) teamed up with Spider-Man twice - in both cases, her spirit inhabits Mary Jane Watson in some capacity.
Red Sonja has also had crossovers with:
Mars Attacks!
John Carpenter (through comics from the Pathfinder RPG)
Tarzan
Vampirella
Betty and Veronica (along with Vampirella)
Also, though often called a "chainmail" bikini, her armor is often shown as scalemail - most likely so that artists did not have to also depict leather underneath the armor
Wendy Pini, one of the creators of the Elfquest comic, would often cosplay as Red Sonja back when that was a much rarer thing for fans to do:

They have been making some wild Red Sonja comics over the years. There have been multiple series where she fights and/or pals around with Vampirella. So you’ve got the chainmail bikini vs. that card red one-piece.
There have even been series where the two of them meet up with the broads from the Archie (Riverdale?) Comics.
