So I finally decided, after two years, to re-watch Game of Thrones. I usually watched it at least once or twice between seasons, until...you know.

Although I'm only on S7E4, I've come to realize that the last two seasons were lost when Jon & Co. went north of The Wall to kidnap a wight. Despite going North, the entire series started to go South (<---see what I did there?). Did Gendry AND Daenerys use wormholes to reach the Wall, send a raven, fly what...1000-1200 miles north to save the "magnificent 7"?

Just before that, the Dothraki Bloodriders and Daenerys decimated the Lannister army on the road from Highgarden to King's Landing. That was one of the most incredible sequences in the entire series. Dickon.

Anyway, my top five episodes:

1.) Winds of Winter
2.) Hardhome
3.) Blackwater
4.) Winter is coming (what a strong 1st episode!)
5.) Rains of Castamere

I was never as disappointed as most die hard GoT fans in the ending of the series, but I've come to understand the disappointment.

I could have accepted the ending if they would have slowed the last 2 seasons down and given me ANY reason to give a shite about Bran.

My problem was less with what they did and more how they did it. Even if they wanted to change characters and give the throne to Bran, it was all just so rushed and didn’t make much sense because of that. Like you mentioned, the time travel aspect alone was weird as hell and they didn’t set up several of the endings at all. While some of the decisions were stupid, it was the execution that was so poor.

There are some really good moments in S7/8. Really good ones (mountain/hound fight, Olenna Tyrell and Jaime, some of the beyond the wall stuff, Arya being hunted by WWs in Winterfell, etc). But they are overshadowed by the questionable decisions and awful execution of plots.

That and any legitimate reason for Dany flipping and going full genocide after she won the war. Jon stops giving the dick and suddenly she's Hitler

This falls under the rushed part. They went to fast into her madness. You could see it starting, then BAM, she's a genocidal manic.

Despite the decline in writing, I thought season 7 was still enjoyable at the least. Spoils of war was great and beyond the wall was still a really fun episode outside of the writing flaws.

Agreed. In my rewatch I enjoyed S7 more and it’s Citizen Kane compared to S8

There is absolutely no way I could re-watch GoT knowing I'm just wasting my time with what's coming in the final two seasons.

Everything that followed was an effort to make the story look better on TV.
White walkers getting a zombie dragon.
Wall falling
Everyone on the same screen as Cersi
Battle of Winterfell
Arya vs NK

I can't wait for Sanderson to finish the books for Martin and give us a real ending.

Everyfanboy has their own scenario they'd like to see play out in the books. I want Dany to take Kings Landing and defeat the Lannisters. I want Jon to defeat the NK and get his powers. Then I want Jon and Dany to go to war.

I mean they did give her legitimate reasons for going crazy.

She gets to Westeros.

3 of her allies are almost immediately taken out because Tyrian and Varys were out maneuvered by Cersei and Jamie.

Sucks, but hey they were new allies so it's not the worst loss although she did lose her fleet.

However, she then meets Jon Snow - a King of the North who won't bend the knee.

She falls for Jon, goes to save him from the Night King. While saving Jon she loses one of her dragons - who she consistently called her children.

She also realizes that the undead army is more immediately important than taking the Iron Throne. She then comes to help Winterfell by supplying the bulk of the forces only to receive a cold welcome from the Stark sisters.

In the fight against the Night King she loses almost all of her Unsullied and Dothraki.

I can't recall if it's right before or right after the fight but she learns that Jon Snow has a better claim to the throne than she does and she is worried about her life's work suddenly being usurped.

One of her best friends Jorah "Lord Friend Zone" Mormont is also killed in the fight with the undead.

She flies back to Dragonstone victorious but severely weakened only to lose another dragon and another fleet.

Another good friend Melisandre is also captured and beheaded in front of her by Cersei who had already refused to help fight the undead and refused to acknowledge her claim to the throne.

All of that combined makes it easy to see why she would go into a rage.

But as mentioned above it was done in so few episodes it felt as if her descent was lightening fast.

This is where I fall. I tried a rewatch of the first season, and I couldn't enjoy it at all, despite how incredible it was, because I spent much of that time mad knowing that the things they were slowly building to were never going to pay off. When you go into it knowing that, what makes it special, at least for me, washes away.

The spine of the story arc would've worked well had the ending been given ~3 full seasons to marinate instead of 1 1/2. I agree with that. Danaerys as conquering liberator cum psychotic tyrant is believable if given enough depth, which they barely pretended to do.

Instead, all we got was fan service after fan service after fan service and pithy bullshite.

I've been in the "Season 7 is just as bad if not worse than season 8" camp for a while now

The little "kidnap a wight" mission north of the wall was so ridiculous and pointless, especially when you consider that it was all designed to convince Cersei to be reasonable

Basically everything that made each character special/consistent was set on fire in season 7 and they had no choice but to continue down that path for the finale.

Yeah, I actually really like the idea that the series ends with Dany burning down King’s Landing. It seems like something in the books Dany is capable of, but the execution of it was horrendous. First off it isn’t effective when everyone directly affected by it is a fricking scumbag, and I think this is where Faegon and company come in at the books (if Winds of Winter is ever released Cersei isn’t surviving the book).

Secondly Dany has no reason to burn down the city in the show. Not even Aerys would have done it at this point. Now if the townspeople refuse to surrender to Dany saying they’ve had enough of Mad Kings and Queens, say they want the heir to Rhaegar as their king, she knows that the king they think is Rhaegar’s heir is a fake and the actual heir to Rhaegar is her current subordinate... then that makes sense she snaps and burns down the whole city.

Yeah, and even that was so poorly done... no one watching gave a shite about Missandei after all the awkward Grey Worm sex.

The thing I hated most of all was how everything was so rushed the last two seasons. And what a disappointment how the white walkers were defeated.. They've been built up since the opening scene of the show. Winterfell should have fallen imo with the white walkers pushing south.
