So far, he's made only six feature films in 17 years.

Hard Eight
Boogie Nights
Magnolia
Punch-Drunk Love
There Will Be Blood
The Master

My ranking

1. Boogie Nights
2. There Will Be Blood
3. The Master
4. Magnolia
5. Punch-Drunk Love

I haven't seen Hard Eight so I left that film off my list. I love Boogie Nights. I think it's PTA's best film. TWBB and The Master are tremendous films. I didn't care as much for Magnolia. The acting is tremendous but it just felt too long and self-indulgent for me. Punch-Drunk Love was a nice, quirky little film that shows Adam Sandler is capable of being a good actor when working with the right directors. All in all, it's a pretty impressive resume.

Same, with Hard 8 4th, though it was a better script than "The Master", but PSH/Phoenix were just so good, I'll give it the edge (even though Hard 8 had a great cast as well).

I've not seen The Master.

Punch-Drunk Love
Hard Eight
Boogie Nights
There Will Be Blood
Magnolia

Punch Drunk Love is the only one I genuinely like. Magnolia is actually the only one I truly hate. Man, I hate that movie. Hate, hate, hate it.

Paul Thomas Anderson and Joaquin Phoenix apparently hit it off very well and had great director/actor chemistry. Phoenix has already signed on for the lead role in PTA's next film "Inherent Vice". its rumored that Charlize Theron will be the female lead.

"Joaquin Phoenix and Paul Thomas Anderson are set to reunite on Inherent Vice, an adaptation of a noirish Los Angeles-set novel by American author Thomas Pynchon. The pair collaborated to rousing effect on The Master, Anderson's acclaimed tale of a cult leader and his muse. Phoenix is currently Oscar-nominated for his role in the film.

Published in 2009, Inherent Vice tells the tale of Larry "Doc" Sportello, a pot-smoking detective who is hired to investigate a kidnap plot. The plot plays out a in turbulent late-60s LA inhabited by Manson family acolytes and "counter-subversive" agents at the LAPD. The New Yorker described the book as "a novel in which paranoia is less a political or metaphysical state than a by-product of smoking too much weed".

I'm sure that won't be ponderous at all. A guy who can't tell a story adapting a book by a guy who writes in an elliptical style? Sign me up!
