I watched this movie over the course of the last couple of days. I'd like to see more Kurosawa films, but damn are they long.

Are there any other good films based in the Sengoku period that aren't 3+ hours in length?

Not long enough for me

Kidding, I find them to be the perfect length.

Throne of Blood is his best film, and is more trim right over 100 minutes.

Seven Samurai is his best film, but it is even longer than Ran.

I'd try Rashomon. It's a great movie, and one of the most influential movies ever made, as it pertains to storytelling.

Seriously. Yojimbo is a master work, too. So is Hidden Fortress. I need to rewatch his stuff again. Been too damn long.

Just read the summaries on IMDb and tell people you watched them all. Sit back and let them be in awe of your cultural knowledge.

In a completely unrelated vein, I really liked his movie Sanjuro where, as I was thinking the whole time,Storyline

A wandering samurai, Sanjuro, is drawn into local politics. The Superintendent of a clan is plotting to take over the clan by implicating the Chamberlain in corrupt activities (activities the Superintendent is actually responsible for). Part of the plan involves killing off the Chamberlain's staff and, in protecting them, Sanjuro sides with them. The supporters are massively outnumbered so it will require all of Sanjuro's cunning and swordcraft to ensure the Superintendent does not succeed in his evil plan. Written by grantss

Can’t remember runtimes but

Throne of Blood
Seven Samurai

Are where you should start if you haven’t seen them

ETA- how could I forget Hidden Fortress and Rashomon? Hidden Forttess is where Lucas got the story for A New Hope. Rashomon is the OG movie told from multiple viewpoints.

If you liked Ran as the feudal Japan version of King Lear, Throne of Blood is MacBeth retold in a feudal Japan setting

The Criterion for Kurosawa was available last year for like $150. I'm sad I didn't buy that.

I found Ran very dull and boring when it came out.

Akiri had for better movies, made earlier in his career:

Seven Samurai
The Hidden Fortress (the movie Star Wars is based on)
Yojimbo
Sanjuro

High and Low is my favorite of his movies that I’ve seen. It isn’t a samurai movie. It’s an absolutely thrilling police procedural. It is a long 140 minutes but it’s such an original approach to the subject matter
