Netflix has revealed all of its new arrivals for January 2019, and among the movies and shows is something a lot of people have been waiting for: the second season of The Punisher. We’ve known that Netflix has been cooking up a second season of The Punisher since the end of last year, when it was confirmed shortly after the well-received premiere of the first season.
Unfortunately, we don’t have an exact date for its release just yet, but we’re sure that fans of the show will be happy enough knowing that it’s coming in January for now. We also don’t know exactly what a second season of The Punisher entails, though the end of season one did suggest that we’ll probably see Jigsaw serve as the main antagonist.
This is probably something of a bittersweet announcement for fans of The Punisher, as the second season will likely be the show’s last. Netflix has been culling its Marvel shows left and right, first starting with Luke Cage and Iron Fist earlier in the year. Initially, it seemed like Netflix was simply cancelling two under-performing shows, potentially setting up for a Heroes for Hire series that stars both Luke Cage and Iron Fist, but then the company cancelled Daredevil too.
Daredevil was almost certainly the most popular Marvel show on Netflix, so if that was cancelled, it doesn’t bode well for the two series that remain: The Punisher and Jessica Jones. Both of those shows had new seasons in development when the other three were cancelled, and it seems likely they’ll be cancelled as well once those seasons premiere.
Obviously, Netflix and Disney could always throw a curve ball by keeping The Punisher or Jessica Jones (or both) going, but it doesn’t seem too likely now that Daredevil has been canned. We’ll have to wait and see what happens, but in assuming the worst, we can only hope that the second season of The Punisher wraps up Frank Castle’s story nicely.

What’s the story on cancelling the other series? Is Netflix preparing for Disney to put a fence around its content for its own streaming service?

OH hell yes my body is ready.

I'd argue Punisher Season 1 was better than JJ S1.

DD had the biggest audience and buzz of all the shows. If it got cancelled they're all going down. Punisher S2 and JJ S3 will be the last Netflix MCU shows.

Disney should've left the Marvel stuff with Netflix.

Hoping, against all evidence to the contrary, that Disney is bringing these titles over to their platform. At least DD, JJ, and Punisher.

Na, it's smart actually.
I have 0 interest in Disney's pending platform right now. Disney movies are easily accessible and worth a watch only once. ABC's back catalog isn't all that great, etc.
I'd easily subscribe if they bring 2-3 of the Marvel shows over. Easily. They are excellent television.

Without question.

Punisher was by far my favorite of all the Marvel shows.
Very excited for S2!

We'll see.
I'm keeping Netflix. I don't have kids, so the draw for Disney's service isn't there for me. IPT will take care of the Marvel shows.

Even with new actors, directors, writers, and Disney studio corporate mandates?

I think the bigger question is how does Netflix replace these shows. I posted about the upcoming Umbrella Academy's new teaser trailer several days ago and this looks like a "supers save the world" comic book show. The Netflix MCU was more True Crime/Vigilante Justice than Supers Save the World. Can they come up with better vigilante characters? DareDevil and Punisher will be hard to top in that regard.

Netflix should start dropping some of their binge-worthy stuff between christmas and new years when people are taking time off from work.

Enjoy it while we can. It's terrible that two spectacular shows in Daredevil and Punisher are to be no more.

Everything points to this not happening. Disney has stated that they want their streaming service to be family friendly.
I'd agree with you that they are smart given your scenario. Unfortunately I don't think this is how it's playing out. They are just assholes

Doesn't Disney own Hulu? Runaways is borderline TVMA anyway, why not bring the Netflix shows over?
