Just got out. That lived up to the hype. This was the first movie where I read the book first. I didn’t even know they were making a movie until a few months ago. I need to listen to the audiobook. I hear great things about it.

You certainly need to give the audiobook a go. It’s special.

I heard my first less than glowingly positive review today from a friend from church. He called it “mid” and said the science stuff didn’t make any sense and was just boring. Liked Gosling though. At first I was taken aback, as this is an intelligent person with an MBA, but his opinion of a good movie starts and ends with Tombstone or Hoosiers
Sounds like you need to cut this person out of your life ;)
I kid, I kid… but probably refrain from talking movies or science with them, lest you start second guessing your opinion on their intelligence.

I could see some curmudgeons not liking the silly humor, but I think the general consensus 9/10 is about right. If you really want to nitpick, the third act pacing drug a bit, one of the flashbacks was a pretty jarring tone change, and a little more explanation in some spots would have been nice.

I’ve gotta finish Tai-Pan and then that’s next

When I told my wife that as we left church, she was surprised too but then I reminded her that he watches no TV series and maybe 3 movies a year.
He will have sports on no matter what year round. His wife doesn’t watch sports and they basically do not intermingle their entertainment.
Smart and fun guy but I had to remember that after hearing him say that.
After the Oscars last week she texted me to ask if we should watch any of them and I said the only two you “might” like was OBAA and Sinners but probably not.
She turned both off within 20 minutes.
Again, awesome intelligent people, both with masters, just do not like anything non-vanilla.

Did I hear right in the movie that his return trip was only supposed to be 4 years? How does that work?

Read the book last summer in a handful of sittings and loved it. Listened to most of the audiobook with the kids before it was pulled from Spotify.
That's the most fun I've had in a theater in 10 years. Truly special flick that was clearly made with love towards the source material. Gosling was exceptional, and that could not have been an easy part to film.
Even the subtle changes they made were on point. Stratt was mildly humanized, but still distant, and I thought it really expanded that character.
Just a phenomenal experience.

Time dilation from traveling at relativistic speeds. Four years from Grace’s perspective, eleven years on Earth.

I re-listened to the audiobook about a month ago, and even I had a “WTF? Oh, right” moment when the computer says 4 years.

I wish this would lead to a proper adaptation of The Forever War

Has anyone read Artemis? How does it compare to PHM and The Martian?

He knew Rocky's home system and calculated the trajectory.

I’ve read Artemis. It’s a much smaller scale than PHM or TM. Those books focus on grand survival of a planet or lone astronaut requiring global assistance and Artemis is about a porter/smuggler on a moon base.
I listened to the audiobook that was narrated by Rosario Dawson and I enjoyed it. Would make a fun space heist movie if they adapted it.

That would have been an immediate delete if that were the case

Movie was great I thought. I always cry at the end in the book. Cried a few times in the movie
