Sound is Rocky’s primary sense
Rocky hears the sound of an English word once, and as soon as his analog is established he remembers it forever.
In the book Grace starts to understand the musical language Rocky uses after a while, and doesn’t really even need the translator.
quote:Rocky’s memory is insane. He’s basically an instant calculator, not because he does the math but because he’s memorized every possible times table. Eridians use base 6 instead of base 10, and he’s able to convert human calculations to his own instantaneously.
Eridians basically have photographic memory as a base trait.

I need to look out for it on my rewatch Tuesday, but did they mention how long Rocky was alone in the Tau Ceti system? Finding out he was there for 46 years was a gut punch in the book.

I also don’t remember there being an option for Grace to return to earth in the book.
It was a bit ambiguous, but they tell him that Earth’s sun has restored and he contemplates going back but then goes to teach his kids.

This was a great film that will easily be on my end of year Top 10 list. Lily from AT&T with a few scenes didn’t hurt either.

My dad didn't know anything about it going in and when Rocky's arm first appeared he let out an audible "Whoa". It was great.
Yeah, I managed to keep my wife from watching anything about it, and was glad.
They nailed it about as well as you could have transitioning from such an in depth scientific book. All of the cuts and adjustments made sense.
And most Importantly they killed it with Rocky and the Grace-Rocky friendship. Great movie.

Thought it was well done. Book was better in the fact at all the science and trial failures they went through, but still wildly entertaining.
My 13 old son thought it was phenomenal. He was very engaged the whole movie. It goes pretty quick for over 2.5 hours.

Just got back. The kids absolutely loved it, especially my nine year old son.
Really good family movie. I had high hopes and was not let down.

Sorry if I completely zoned out, but was it discussed how the rest of the Hail Mary crew died and why Grace survived? Was it because he was put in an early coma?

Just got out. One of the best movies I’ve seen in years. I took the kids and they loved it too.

It is left unexplained.. Most assume even though you had the gene, it didn't guarantee survival. Also if was stated there was an issue with the feeding tubes

Seems like I missed this too. I heard them talking about it, but I assumed it was more of like the metaphorical "explorer" gene, not like a real physical thing.

I don't think they mentioned the gene in the movie. I just got out and don't recall it.
Basically very few people have the coma resistance gene. Which is also why Grace is forced to go

Just got out of the movie. All I can say is you really have to cheer for this at the box office. In an industry that has slowed down and hits us with remake after remake. We get a big budget film with an original story. Truly enjoyed this one and hope it inspires more films like it.

We just got out. I kept tearing up and that scene where Rocky saved him, man.
The explosion at the facility made us jump it was so loud in Dolby
Great movie

Fantastic movie, wife (non reader) went in completely blind “Is this a war movie or something?” And loved it.
Felt like they nailed Rocky’s tunnel in the Hail Mary.

I watched a YouTube video last night with Gosling, Weir, Lord and Miller and Weir said that it's not explained in the book or movie, but he has an explanation and is holding onto it for a possible sequel.

I doubt it would be anytime soon. Found this article as well:
Screen Rant

In an interview with ScreenRant's Liam Crowley for Project Hail Mary, Weir announced that he's currently writing a new novel. While he doesn't want to reveal any specific story details just yet, he did say the book will be science fiction, like fans have come to expect, and it'll be a "new standalone story. It's not a sequel to anything."
Regarding Project Hail Mary, Weir admitted he doesn't have any ideas that are "strong enough to run with yet," which is why he's focused on his current standalone sci-fi novel. He does have "bits and pieces of good ideas for sequels," but it's not far enough along for him to feel like he can properly write a second installment. He's hopeful that, with time, he'll land on a solid story idea. If there's going to be a sequel at some point, "I want it to be good."

I need to know as well.
We ran about 15-20 minutes late and walked in about five minutes before that scene.

I heard my first less than glowingly positive review today from a friend from church.
He called it “mid” and said the science stuff didn’t make any sense and was just boring. Liked Gosling though.
At first I was taken aback, as this is an intelligent person with an MBA, but his opinion of a good movie starts and ends with Tombstone or Hoosiers.
