Absolutely not, they’ll be fine. The only thing that could lose them might be the science, but they’ll love Rocky and the classrooms scenes.

I think the most “risqué” thing would be the mention of astrophage breeding / sex, but it’s all done inside discussions of the science of it. The stuff in the book about Dubois and Shapiro having a sexual relationship is not in the movie.

I don’t think anybody was wanting an extended sequence of taumoeba breeding.
No, but I think it should have been more than two lines of exposition.

The way it happened was nothing more than Grace telling Rocky “nitrogen kills then but I already fixed it and they’re good to go.”

Then later going “uh oh, the fix no one saw also caused a major problem.”

It’s a major hurdle in the book and the catalyst for the ending. The movie didn’t need an extended arc on it, but 2-3 more minutes or run time to expound the issue would have been better.

That was really my only gripe. Otherwise I think it was a great adaptation and movie. All the other leaning out to fit the change in medium made sense.

I understand them essentially glossing over the problem for a viewing audience - as much as the science fascinates us in the book, I think a movie audience will struggle keeping up with it. They needed the pacing to stay above what evolving Taumeaba would provide.

I did hate that they cut out Grace helping Rocky get back to his environment after Rocky had cut him loose. I felt like that was an emotional connector that was lost.

I would have liked to see this too. I didn’t mind them cutting Grace nearly killing Rocky when he extracted the soot off his recovering body.

Was a great movie and they made the best movie they could have. You could tell from interviews they were focused on the rocky and grace relationship. That was the core. Everything else was trimmed. I wish in the beginning they did a montage to build the stakes higher. Like the sun was dying.

Him running away from blip A should have been changed too. Otherwise was great seeing the inside of Rocky’s ship and a clip from earth.

I told someone this morning about seeing it yesterday afternoon and described at as a cross between Interstellar and The Martian.

What a friggin movie.

I went in with very high expectations and they were more than met.

I have a hard time imagining a better Grace and Rocky. How the connection between Grace and Roky played out actually had me in my feels more than it did while in the book. Rocky saving Grace was such a great emotional scene.

The whole theatre was laughing quite a bit early on, for good reason, but when first contact with Rocky was about to be made, you could have heard a pin drop in there. My dad didn't know anything about it going in and when Rocky's arm first appeared he let out an audible "Whoa". It was great.

My dad is getting up there in age and it's pretty hilarious listening to him talk about movies in itself. After we got out the first thing he said was "I can't believe that was based on a true story"

That’s great. This right there is why it’s a great movie and why they took the lighter tone with it compared to a more serious interstellar like tone. High rewatch ability and families can see it. All ages will have something they love about it. Getting bogged down on too much science would have taken time away from the heart of the story. Also love how they cut the taumeoba having multiple break outs and cutting the use of the Beatles to power the ship.

Nah, dude was super into both films so he appreciated the loose comparison.

I HATE Interstellar. It’s an incredibly dumb movie (with a couple of good scenes sprinkled in)

Interstellar was okay. I think I've outgrown Christopher Nolan, unfortunately.

That's great. Glad your dad enjoyed it.

Would it be ok for 9- and 7-year-old boys?

I read the book and can only think of a couple of potential scenes (basically just the mentioning of a sexual relationship with the scientists)

Me too, these are small but good memories. It's like he never heard the name Rocky so on the way home he kept referring to him as E.T. and at the end he thought it was cool he was teaching the little munchkins. We were like dad are you sure you brought your hearing aids

For sure. i'm not a parent but I feel like I'd be on the not let them see bad stuff side of things at that age and I'd have no problem with them seeing it. No mention of the sexual relationship in the film. No gore or anything. Perfect family movie imo.

Absolutely.

There is a tense scene with very mild violence. and some soft bad language.

It's honestly on the very lite edge of PG-13. It could have easily been PG and I wouldn't bat an eye.

I am gonna take my 8 and 5 year olds to see it this weekend.

I have a similar sentiment

My wife cuts eyes at me when they hear "shite" in a movie we have on tv, but they listen to PMT with me in the car on they way to school 3x a week, so they definitely know some bad words, ha

Then they’re definitely going to be fine.
