Bale might be tops for me. Crackhead in The Fighter, Ford V Ferrari, Exodus, The Dark Knight, American Psycho, dude's awesome.

I have to say Gary Oldman, because I often forget who he is when watching him in a role. Robin Williams had excellent range, but I always found myself saying “look at Robin Williams showing all this range!” Same, to a degree, with Christian Bale.

I believe Depp could play many things on the screen

I also think Brad Pitt, Leonardo Decaprio, and Jack Nicholson are very versatile.

Little Miss Sunshine would have been a better choice for him.

Phillip Seymour Hoffman might be #1 when you look at the range across his filmography
An idiot small town cop in Nobody's Fool
A geek in Twister
A gay man crushing on Dirk Diggler in Boogie Nights
Comic relief in Along Came Polly
A villain in Mission Impossible
A tragic figure in Before the Devil Knows You're Dead
Truman Capote
A spook in the know in Charlie Wilson's War
The Rolling Stone music critic/lover in Almost Famous
The hapless assistant in The Big Lebowski
The cult leader (portrait of possibly Scientology and L Ron Hubbard) in The Master
