On a historical note how fricking nuts is it they blew that up with even that slight possibility it could kill everyone and end the world.
about that, after Teller presented the possibility, Oppenheimer tasked Hans Bethe with looking into it further, and he came to the conclusion that those chances were so improbable that they were virtually impossible.

But still I mean they never definitively said it was zero. I’m sure Oppenheimer knew it was minuscule as well but even the slim chance it could happen is scary shite. My reaction would’ve been the same as Groves just hearing that it had even been kicked around

Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't "exactly zero" rarely an outcome in quantum physics? I'm not trying to be argumentative, and I am certainly not a scientist, but its fun to talk about this stuff.

we're talking about a Nolan film here. he'll be lucky to be nominated no matter how good his film is.
He has been nominated for five Oscars in his career:
Original Screenplay - Memento
Original Screenplay - Inception
Motion Picture - Inception
Directing - Dunkirk
Motion Picture - Dunkirk

You may be right I’m not really sure of the particulars there either.

feel like Oppenheimer will be nominated for the most Oscars of any film this year but will fail to win Best Picture.
It definitely should win
But does it meet the new woke diversity inclusive requirements?

• People with cognitive or physical disabilities, or who are deaf or hard of hearing
Well a large part of the storyline does center on communism…

Just got out of it. Damn good. Long obviously but I was impressed. Would love to see it again in Imax. May make the trek to mall of Georgia to see it in 70mm

I feel like every movie should just put a post credit scene of the lead saying “I’m gay”

Good luck. Unless you want to go at 11 PM or 11 AM during the week, there are very few seats left not located in the first row. The earliest I could find weekend tickets is Friday August 4th. I think the mall of GA is changing the imax movie over to Gran Turismo around August 11th or 15th….can’t remember the exact day….so you don’t have much time left

I’m not sure they had any measurements yet to know the exact energy to expect and if it may result in any fusion and then definitely didn’t have measurements on that energy released. Now we know pressure can’t be maintained enough in the atmosphere for a chain reaction. (Layman’s understanding, please someone correct as needed)

This movie sounds like an almost 3 hour long documentary.
Well it’s certainly not that. The marketing kind of makes you think it will be a WW2 era thriller about the bomb when it’s actually a biopic but it’s not some boring documentary.

This is insane. wow. The Oscars have always been a joke but this is so ridiculous.

Fantastic - another Nolan masterpiece. I thought it was great leaving the theater, but now that it has marinated a bit, I like it even more. That was a fine film. Days later I find myself thinking about it.....and delving more into the subject. That's not the norm for a movie!
Echoing almost everyone in the thread (I read all 18 pages) - the acting was superb. I think RDJ is a virtual lock for best supporting actor. He was exceptional. The entire cast nailed their respective parts. So well done. I also think the silence at Trinity was beautiful. Perfect. I was almost preparing myself for an extra loud explosion, then silence. That's just magic, man. Then Oppenheimer talking to the crowd after the bomb was dropped.....faking euphoria and seeing bomb casualties in front of him was cinematic genius. You could feel the internal struggle he was dealing with.
Michael Warburton posted an interview with Oppenheimer later in life on Twitter....it ran about 6-8 minutes. I thought that would've been great at the end of the film. To see him talking in the flesh about a lot of the material in the movie.
If anyone has more books, documentaries, etc. on Oppenheimer or the Manhattan Project you think deserves a look, post it here. I want to explore all of this more.

I think they did a good job setting that up because when Fission was discover Oppenheimer is doing all the theoretical stuff on his whiteboard and turns to Lawrence like “nope they didn’t do it” and Lawrence is like well the issue with that is we’re doing it next door.
idk if that story is true or not but putting it in really demonstrates that theoretical physics is still theoretical.

I think a large aspect of how good a movie is is how much it sticks with you after seeing it. There are some movies I’ll see that I think are good, my wife and I will discuss them on the way home, but once we get home they’re never discussed again. This movie has stuck with me, given me reason to do more research. Etc etc
