There’s been a lot of talk about how the books just have too much information for the movies to fully capture.

One example I thought about today was in the Deathly Hallows part 1, after they take Harry from his home and fight all the death eaters in the sky: once lupin shows up he grabs Harry and points his wand demanding to know what creature was in his office the first time Harry came to see him (in the third book) Harry responds a grindylow, but you never would have understood that unless you read the books because they don’t show that in the third movie.

Probly a million more examples but this one stuck with me today

Also PSA: syfy is showing all the movies this week/weekend

Like the vast majority of stories, HP is better in the books than the movies. Great audiobook road trip stories.

I am not sure, but it was a major plot point wasn't it?

Kinda, it showed some aspects of Voldy’s character. He chose to go after the halfblood like himself and not the pureblood that he claimed to value.

Showed that the prophecy was only a prophecy because they put value in it as well.

To be fair that was not Gambon's fault, it's what Yates instructed him to perform.

and again that's the directors fault..most of these actors never read the books I'm sure. I know Alan Rickman said he never read any of the books.

Well it didn't help that Gambon didn't bother to try getting into the character or understanding the material at all.

Was it effortless to ease back into the role of Hogwarts headmaster, Albus Dumbledore?

Well, I don’t have to play anyone really. I just stick on a beard and play me, so it’s no great feat. I never ease into a role – every part I play is just a variant of my own personality. I’m not really a character actor at all.

What makes Dumbledore the greatest wizard of all time?

I have no idea. I just say what the script tells me to say. I learn the lines and say them – I don’t have much sub-text. There’s no sub-text in Harry Potter really, it’s all magic. Anything can happen.

Rickman, at least, knew that Snape was complicated and tried to show it.
LINK
quote:

“What I knew was he was a human being and not an automaton,” Rickman said. “I knew there was some sense of protection for Harry or I worked that out. It was enough to know, I didn’t know he was a double agent.”

LINK

Rickman further elaborated on the concept of Snape's ambiguous role to the Los Angeles Times, noting that playing Snape was something of "a punctuation mark" to his own life "because I would be doing other things but always come back to that, and I was always aware of my place in the story even as others around me were not."

Maybe it was direction, but Gambon admitted he had never read the books and knew nothing about the character.

I did not read the books and was a late watcher of the movies but really enjoyed them. Looks like I need to try and read up.

Btw, was Harry trying to bone Herm in DH1 with that dance? It’s ridiculous and conspicuously just an attempt to be anti-cliche that they didn’t end up together. Much better chemistry than her and old frog faced wimpy Ron.

Goblet of Fire was always my favorite book but there are parts of that movie that make you wonder what series you are watching.

During the dance there's a five minute period where you get weird pop rock and raging at that dance to a scene where two kids are literally fricking in a carriage to the point where it's rocking back and forth.

No they were just trying to not be miserable. I think that was supposed to be them being goofy but then immediately being reminded of how shitty things were. I actually think that scene points to how platonic their relationship is

That’s how I felt the first several times watching the scene but then see how Harry looks at her at the end and she pulls away. No way Ron Weasley pulls that irl.

Goblet of Fire

Instead of the Ministry spending all of OotP wondering if Voldemort was back, they could have just brought Harry to the Pensieve and confirmed it after Cedric’s death.

On the other hand I thought the scene in Order of the Phoenix about Neville visiting his parents in the asylum was one of the best things that Rowling wrote... and it didn't make the movies because the set up would have been too long for a movie that was already running a bit long.

Sad part was they hinted to it in Goblet with the three curses scene.
