The overwhelming majority of blatantly political/ideological art over the last 10 years has been absolute trash and certainly hasn't appealed to the non-voting middle. Not just because it's left-leaning, but because it only resonates with a really narrow band of people because nobody else buys the premise. There's also the issue of the artists being pretty dumb most of the time, but that's a different issue.
You just can't seriously sell normal, center-right positions as oppression, etc., which means it's inherently inauthentic, and good luck making good art out of that. Amusingly, art is dominated by the left, which idolizes critical approaches. Yet the art is so rarely critical with regard to the ideology underpinning it. Again, I think that's part of why it's so self-defeating (and usually a failure in the eyes of the public). It's inherently dishonest.
You could make a good movie out of aging lefty radicals confronting their past, engaging with modern radicalism, etc. and you could probably make it in a way where most people find some virtue in the leftist causes, but it has to be critical of itself in a meaningful way. Maybe this will be that, but the critic responses don't really seem like it.
