It's BS. In MT, you're justified using force if you reasonably believe that it's necessary for self-defense against imminent use of unlawful force. Montana Code Annotated 45-3-102.
There are no exceptions to the rule. Lazy writing.
Also, I noticed in the last episode that Jamie said the Californian committed assault against Beth. Not true. Assault requires reasonable apprehension of bodily injury - saying she's going to f*** Rip doesn't meet the standard.
